Born in 1867 just west of Hayesville, North Carolina, George W. Truett grew up to be one of the outstanding Baptist preachers of the twentieth century. He moved to Whitewright, Texas, in 1889 and planned to practice law. His Baptist church in Whitewright, however, ordained him to the ministry in 1890, ignoring his vigorous protest against such action.
(18971944) as the church's pastor.
Best known for his advocacy of religious liberty, Truett also helped found Baylor Hospital in Dallas. Less known about Truett was his understanding of stewardship. Money meant nothing to him, and in twenty-three of his forty-seven years in Dallas, he led his church to spend more money on missions and benevolences than on its own ministries.

Thy Will Be Done

"Thy Will Be Done" is an enjoyable and enlightening read of the Reverand George Truett, longtime pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas in the early 1900s. My interest was sparked by a couple of past sales jobs that required traveling in Western North Carolina, Truett's birthplace. I remember several times driving past his birthplace and one time made a brief visit.
Among the areas covered include:
1. Truett's early life in Western North Carolina and eventual move to Dallas TX.
2. Raising money for Baylor University.
3. Longtime pastorate at First Baptist of Dallas.
4. Involvement in various organizations such as the Baptist World Alliance.
5. Participation in several revivals.
6. Involvement in World War I as a chaplain.
7. Happy home life in spite of his frequent absence.
8. Reflections of the people he loved and who loved him (different races, faiths, and economic backgrounds).
9. Relationships with the rich and famous and the plain and ordinary people of his day.
10. Final illness.
Indeed, Truett was quite a preacher who refused to compromise the truth of the Gospel and yet loved people for who they were.
The book was highly readable and the narrative flowed smoothly.
