James Phelps is an award-winning senior reporter for the Daily and Sunday Telegraph in Sydney. A Living Hell on Earth

As someone who has served time in Sydney's Long Bay Gaol in the late 1980's, I can attest to the place being austere, harsh & hostile, which I guess is what you would expect maximum security prisons to be. 'The Bay' was a living hell on earth for the guilty & innocent alike and I for one, have no fond memories of my time spent in the Central Industrial Prison & Metropolitan Remand Centre (two of the five prisons which made up the 'Malabar Hilton'). Rape, murder, stabbings & vicious bashings were all par for the course. James Phelps paints an accurate picture of a very few of the better known hard men who called Long Bay home & their exploits, not forgetting the prison guards who took their lives in their own hands when they went into work. Good read for those unfamiliar with prison life in Australia and a reminiscence of sorts for those who've done time in our maximum security gaols.

An easy enjoyable read.

Not bad. It is an easy read and brings you into the world that was Long Bay Jail. When I started reading the book, I must say that I was immediately put off by all the nonsense about ghosts and it definitely being haunted and started to wonder if I had wasted my cash. I'm happy to report that once Chapter 1 begins, it is all non-fiction. There are a few pictures at the back of the Kindle version (none of which are linked to their stories, mind you). More pictures and details would have been nice and added to the reading experience, in my opinion.
All in all, enjoyable and it would be a good airplane or by-the-pool read.

this is a hard hitting, no punches pulled, insight into one of the toughest correctional centres in the country! not for the feint hearted. I was a volunteer for the Department of Corrective Services for nearly 15 years ... teaching community programmes. I had a relative who spent time in the facility. what went on, and currently goes, on ... behind the sandstone walls ... they say truth is stranger than fiction ... no one could make this scary s*** up! read it at your own peril. an insightful, informative and truly disturbing read. enjoy?
