The racial tensions and possible societal disintegration that occupy the pages of Nobel Prize winning novelist Nadine Gordimer's July's People will most likely seem eerily familiar to Americans. The inferior status of blacks, the exploitative and domineering position of whites - these are American problems. Yet, Gordimer is not an American. She is South African and her novel deals not with the Civil Rights Movement or the legacy of slavery in the U.S., but rather with the disastrous consequences of Apartheid in her homeland.

Written in 1981, July's People is set in a future South Africa in which blacks have finally overthrown their white oppressors through the use of extreme violence. The society that cradled Apartheid has been destroyed, as black militias battle the white army for control. The novel centers around the Smales, a liberal white Johannesburg family and their flight from their war-torn home. But this story is not just about them - they are led from the mayhem by their servant of 15 years, a man they only know as July, who takes them to his tribal village in the nation's interior wilderness. This turning of the tables of dependency in the family and servant's relationship is what pushes this work forward.

Little "happens" as far as sustained action in July's People. The war, the fighting, the havoc is all kept on the periphery, heard through jumbled radio broadcasts, second-hand retellings, and pure speculation. What Gordimer focuses on is the interaction of her characters. Objects once meaningless, take on entirely new levels of symbolic importance in this post-Apartheid world. When they flee, July has to drive the Smales' family vehicle to avoid attracting combative attention. But once the keys are in his possession, July is hesitant to give them back, having acquired a new found power as the sole individual who has the skin color to pass in the new society. Predictably, the Smales' adaptation to this new dynamic, is less than smooth. Buried tensions come to the surface on both sides, as the characters struggle to accept their new lives. The Smales can only react and their passive response to powerless existences is provocative. The novel begs the reader to ask: What would you do if you were in this position?

What may be most interesting about July's People, is that for a novel localized around interracial relationships, none of the characters in the novel are complete, appearing as two-dimensional studies of people rather than genuine well-rounded individuals. Perhaps this is deliberate, as Gordimer wants us to focus more the issue of black-white relations than allowing our emotions to become involved. Readers might then take sides and the entire novel rotates on an axis of ambiguity, concerning everything from the motivations of the characters to what the future will bring. We are left in the same limbo as the characters and this achieves an alienating chill which overwhelms the reader. But while Gordimer succeeds in distancing our feelings from clouding our visions of the ideological conflict, this leads to some feelings of indifference. Nowhere does the reader sense the same panic as Maureen Smales as she watches July become less and less subservient and more independent over the course of her family's stay in his village. Nowhere does the reader see any shred of hope in the novel's pages. The open-ended conclusion of the work continues in this vain, leaving the reader wondering whether a situation as horrible as Apartheid can ever have a positive outcome. Strangely, as events played in reality, they did and yet this doesn't undercut the intellectual muscle of the work.

Much of this work is likely Gordimer probing her own conscious and anxieties, as a liberal South African white. The Smales' never supported Apartheid and pride themselves on how well they treated July while he was in their employment. Yet, they never did anything to change the situation either. To thinkers like Foucault or Fanon, if one does not actively try to revolt against exploitive institutions, a person is therefore indicted in the institutions' injustices. The Smales' may feel liberal guilt, but is their guilt for the lower status of blacks in society or because they don't necessarily want to give up their privileges? These are the questions Gordimer wants us to ponder.

The most revealing aspect of July's People is how all of Gordimer's characters devolve into selfishness and greed, and act largely only on part of their own interests. Her portrayal of both races is far from one-sided, far from sympathetic. While the blacks have spent decades under foreign rule in their own land, once they gain a whiff of power, they begin to fight with one another. The future society Gordimer leaves us with is one of absolute chaos and unmitigated hatreds. Even reasons for potential optimisms (like July so graciously trying to help his former employers despite the shade of their skin) are lost as time progresses and old foundations crumble. We all bear the guilt of the societies we create and the ramifications of iniquity seldom are solved through violence. Fortunately, in this case, life didn't mimic art, and Apartheid ended in a more beneficial manner than Gordimer had imagined. But her work still pertains - race relations, not just in South Africa, but worldwide remained fractured. Guns and bombs are still the path favored by governments and terrorists alike to end disputes. Gordimer shows us a world that is frightening because it is so possible. She reminds us that no change, no matter how needed or worthy, ever comes without consequences.

I am in awe of this book

I don't understand the confusion over the writing. I've read other noted experimental novels that were much more difficult (ie Calvino) but writing can (and should) take so many forms, why does it always have to be predictable and follow convention? In this book the structure worked for me and I admire the way she manipulated language to create an intended mood.
What is interesting is that this is a book of conjecture or futurism, written when the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa was taking real shape and getting serious global attention, and when the white people were becoming more aware as to what was really happening in the townships (the news was heavily regulated by the apartheid regime).
Gordimer was working out what might happen if there was real violence and revolution in the streets. It must have been a very scary time, not knowing how it was all going to turn out and whether South Africa would go down the same road as other African countries where clashing clans exterminate each other on a regular basis. She had to consider what would happen if their lives would be in jeopardy to the point that they would have to flee and go in hiding. What a scary concept, one we have only recently had to contemplate after 9/11 woke us up to terror in our midst. (I personally had a fantasy of what I would put in the suitcase and which direction I would head if I felt that the attacks were going to continue).
While there was violence during the revolution in South Africa, it wasn't nearly as bad as the book projected. In reality, the revolution happened without a violent overthrow of the government but with a democratic and relatively (relative to other similar changes of government) peaceful election (thank you Mandela). The violence that occurred was sporadic, and there were bombings during the uncertain times while the government was de-stabilized. But white people weren't pulled from their homes or farms and killed in mass numbers. The way I gather it the "white flight" was from, for example, Johannesburg into the suburbs.
However, back to the novel. I thought it was a great character study and attempt to dissect what it might feel like to be forced into your worst nightmare, your world turned upside down due to civil war, how Gordimer, who likely had black servants in her household (and maybe still does?) would feel if this situation were to happen. It was her version of how one might handle the worst case scenario. Details like what she would do without tampons, and how her children adapted so easily, gave the novel depth.
People think that not much "happens" in this book, but in life things don't tend to happen with the rapidity that they do in novels or movies. Life happens slowly, and people lose sleep trying to figure out how to decide what to do next, how to handle a situation, going through the "what ifs." The big thing has happened that set the plot in motion - they were forced to leave behind their entire material lives and start over in a strange place where everything was unfamiliar and they had to rely on their servant's kindness. One by one they lost even the smallest "things" they had left that made them feel safe and like they had choices. The car was gone. The gun was taken. Even their clothes were falling apart. What more was there to lose? What do you have left when your possessions are gone? Is a marriage enough to survive on? How do you fill the empty days? It is a fascinating topic and Gordimer only scratches the surface of this complex issue.
I only give this a 4 star instead of 5 because I am really frustrated with the ending. I want to know what happened. I don't like being left hanging after getting involved with this family. I wish there was more about this from other readers.
My thought is that since it was a novel based on conjecture, she left the ending open to speculation, indicating that the future can't be predicted, and she wasn't willing to bring her "what if" to a final conclusion, anything could happen.

Just thought I'd clarify that the "dashes" that reviewers have been referring to are in fact the standard for marking dialogue in South Africa and, I might add, many other countries.
Gordimer's novel is, I think, a great work of literature that deserves to be read as much for its style and attention to detail as for its touchy and still-applicable subject matter.

Informative and funny

I reluctantly gave this book a try after hearing Dr. Robert M. Price recommend it on his Bible Geek podcast. I say reluctantly because I was not overly impressed by the previous Bo Bennett book Price recommended, "The Concept". This time, however, the book was a worthwhile purchase.

The book is perfectly described by the subtitle, "The Ultimate Collection of Over 300 Logical Fallacies". One might quibble about whether they are all *logical* fallacies but all are well explained and well demonstrated by good examples. The examples are not only instructive but in most cases funny as well. Mr. Bennett has a great sense of humor and the book is a joy to read; it's hard to put it down without reading "just one more".

One can deduce Bennett's position on a lot of issues by the examples he constructs and/or chooses. It doesn't dilute the thrust of the book unduly but one does get the impression one might be getting instruction in more than logical fallacies.

I purchased the Kindle edition and it was formatted perfectly; everything worked as it should. Usually I complain about the progress bar having too few chapter marks. In this case the opposite problem reared its head; the progress bar was virtually all chapter marks.

My only complaint is the spotty editing. There are numerous cases where you have words like "show" instead of "shown" and "clout" instead of "cloud". Nothing too serious and standard fare for self published works like this but noticeable.

helpful but dry

This is a useful book if one just wants a brief exposure to many fallacies. The writer is clear, succinct, and amusing at times. He organizes 300 fallacies alphabetically. This may be useful if you know what to label the fallacy you are interested in but not so helpful if you want to learn what type of fallacy may be present in speech or writing that one encounters in daily life. It would be more useful to classify them into types or groups although he does say that there is no agreement on how to organize fallicies. At the end of the book he does list the 25 most common fallacies with links to his descriptions.

All in all, not a bad book as an introduction. It was a bit dry to read. I ended up reading small sections at any one sitting. I will be looking for other books an this topic for a more thorough and hopefully readable account.

Too Many Examples from Religion.

Somewhat, I've learned some arguments from Logically Fallacious, yet it's too encyclopedic that I can't remember a lot either. I think it's the constant use of religious example that zoned me out too much. It would have been nice if the author used real, actual examples (he did it one for the beauty pageant contender, but more, please). All in all, there's too much religion in Logically Fallacious, and most of it is pointless to me.

Memo to the author: It's not "The reason why is because..." but "The reason why is that..."

He buttresses this readable and well-organized presentation with an outstanding collection of references. Wireless power history, theory, sources, receivers, and applications are covered conscientiously and adroitly. The book answers common technical questions and connects disparate pieces, such as why rectenna arrays behave differently than ordinary antenna arrays and why a rectenna utilizing a single diode can outperform a four-diode bridge rectifier as well as why it can approach 100% efficiency.

Cute, but no good for the Shelf

I took the NMBE surgery shelf yesterday. When I reflected on which resources were useful to me during my preparation, this book did not compare well to NMS Surgery and NMS Surgery Casebook.

The main issue is that preparing for the shelf is all about reading and doing lots of questions that related to the diagnosis of surgical problems, pre- and post-operative care. Though Surgery Mentor has questions, they are not the right type (either too detailed or too simple - not clinical-gestalt-based).

If you are interested in learning about surgery with a pocket-sized book, this is the book for you. If you are interested in using the little time you have during your clerkship to actually prepare for the grade-determining shelf, don't buy this book.

I do not intend to enter into the theological disputes on this subject. I will merely comment that the author is entirely correct about the Jewish origins of Communism. He is also correct that the teachings of the TALMUD ARE THE REAL UNDERLYING BASIS OF COMMUNIST DOCTRINE. Lying for the sake of revolution, mass murder, etc. are the secular analogues of Talmudic teachings.

After reading Mr. Hendries outstanding books "Solving the mystery of babylon the great:tracking the beast from the synagogue to the vatican" about a year ago i had to get this. It gets right to the point with outstanding information regarding the jewish belief system they hold from the gentile masses and how it functions through the talmud and the kaballah. it explains how this thought process carried over into plitical movements of communism and zionism. The listinging of those in soviet rule who were zionist jews from the outset is great. What i also found informative is how it exploits gullable evangicals who will follow israel to their dying breath even if it means terrorism and abandoning sound biblical doctrine. What makes it even more of a outstanding resource is every fact he state from the founding of the zionist idiology to the indoctrination into the calvary chapel Church is very well documented with source material. I can not recommend it more highly

Peter Singer is currently Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University and Laureate Professor at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the University of Melbourne. He is the author or editor of more than forty books, including Animal Liberation (1975), Rethinking Life and Death (1996) and, most recently, The Life You Can Save (2009). In 2005, he was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine.

A Philosophical Classic.

There are very few philosophers as polarizing as Peter Singer, but that is the inevitable outcome of questioning the received morals of our culture. In Practical Ethics he lays out a comprehensive presentation of his overarching position on ethics, and examines how these principles influence difficult real-life decisions. While many who only hear his conclusions without the supporting arguments find his positions distasteful, anyone who reads and truly understands how he reached them generally has no choice but to concede that his arguments are very moving and well-reasoned.

Everyone should read this book at least once, and after this general overview, make sure you check out his more focused writings on end of life decisions, charity, and animal rights in "Rethinking Life and Death", "The Life You Can Save", and "Animal Liberation" respectively.

Ethics from a practical point of view

There are few philosophers who are as controversial as Peter Singer - he has been attacked countless times by people of all stripes and agendas, and his lectures have been disrupted by protesters agitating against his viewpoints. Why is a tenured academic whose writings involve the technicalities of academic philosophy so controversial?

The problem is not so much Singer's utilitarian philosophy itself (which is held by many people in Western culture, from academics to economists to libertarian Christian conservatives) but rather the consistent and ruthless way he applies it to all moral questions.

Like many intellectuals and other people today, Singer believes religion is no longer meaningful for intelligent, rational agents and religious concepts can't be used to make ethical decisions. Somewhat like Russell, Bentham, Mill, G.E. Moore and David Hume before him, Singer argues the only viable ethical framework is an empirical one based on the best scientific understanding we have of human nature. Singer goes about dismantling the hidden religious premises that often underlie arguments in the moral sphere.

Singer is most controversial in his rejection of the concept of the sanctity of life. While deeply grounded in Western law and philosophy, this concept often used in 'pro-life' v 'pro-choice' arguments about abortion (and to a certain extent, contraception and euthanasia) are based on a religious concept of human nature and dignity. Singer believes though an absolute regard or concern for all human life in all its forms is not only unrealistic, but also irrational.

Singer instead argues the best way to decide moral issues are the secular premises supplied by Utilitarian and consequentialist ethics. As such, what matters is not so much the moral intention behind an act, or whether it conforms to a law (secular or religious) but the consequences it has. Singer thus argues we can attach and calculate values for different kinds of lives, and make moral judgments on this basis.

The most controversial area for this is perhaps Singer's stance on bioethical issues. Singer is openly in favour of euthanasia and abortion, and also argues in some cases it is better to kill a severely disabled person than to let them live. He also argues in some instances, an intelligent and healthy non-human animal like a chimp or gorilla has more value than a hopelessly crippled infant. Singer argues for this in more detail in his works on animal liberation.

Singer's critics, particularly religious ones, have attacked him on this ground, claiming he devalues human life by admitting intentional killing of innocent (though severely disabled) people is morally justifiable in some situations, along with his arguments for abortion and euthanasia. Yet even a cursory reading of his works shows Singer is no Dr Jack Kevorkian or Hitler in waiting. Singer actually places a high value on human life and human flourishing, and even donates 20% of his income to charities like Oxfam and Doctors without Borders. He also (rightly) argues strenuously for the need for richer people in wealthy nations to spend more on things like Foreign Aid and life-saving projects like helping people in poor countries access vaccines for diseases that are easily dealt with in the rich world. These are hardly the arguments of an evil person who simply wants to bump people off for selfish gain or ideological reasons, which many a religious fanatic can't claim to be exempt from.

If Singer is to be proven wrong, then the philosophy he uses (Utilitarianism) has to be shown to be wrong, or at least based on questionable premises. I think this has been done, but more by academic critics of Singer than by people who simply hate him or protest against him. The problem is not so much the conclusions Singer reaches but the way in which he reaches them. Applied slightly differently, and not necessarily using religion or religious grounds, I think it is possible to demonstrate the need to retain a concept of the sanctity of human life, including that of disabled people. People who oppose abortion and euthanasia (and also the miserable state of the world's poor) rightly argue we should value human lives, even those unborn, born disabled, or at the margins and ends of life. Such a value though should not be pushed to fanatical extremes, as Singer rightly argues.

As controversial as he may be, Singer advocates for his positions using coherent and consistent logic and with the highest respect for evidence. This is why his work deserves the five stars, rather than his actual positions themselves.

A classic, often misinterpreted

Contrary to what one reviewer said, Singer does not teach that all human beings are not persons. He argues that some human beings are not persons, and that some do not have a right to life. If you don't like these views, I suggest you take Singer, and this book, very seriously. Taking your opponent seriously is often the best way to get your opponent's supporters, if not your opponent, to switch sides. Alternatively, if you find yourself disagreeing with Singer's conclusions, but none of his premises, then perhaps you should switch sides. Singer certainly is not right about everything, but Practical Ethics is still a classic and accessible introduction to applied ethics, well worth a read through.

About the Author
Ike Okonta is a writer and journalist. His first collection of short stories, The Expert Hunter of Rats, won the Association of Nigerian Authors Prize in 1998. Oronto Douglas is Nigeria's leading human rights lawyer and was a member of the legal team that represented Ken Saro-Wiwa in 1995.

Corporate imperialism at its worst

This book provides an insightful history of how the Royal Shell Corporation and other oil companies have destroyed the environment and societies of the Niger Delta. The book starts with a short history of Western colonialism from the 1600s to the WWII. Starting with the discovery of oil post WWII, Shell Oil, along with Mobil, Texaco, Agip, BP and Chevron have replaced western governments as the de facto rulers of this region. The oil companies obtain oil from the Niger Delta, sell it, and use some of the profits to pay Nigerian government officials to safeguard their pipelines and oilwells in the country. The latter often includes torturing and killing locals who protest the pollution from oil drilling, flaring, and oil spills. All of this is glossed over by a multi-million dollar PR campaign by the Shell and the other oil companies.

The authors of this book document the history of environmental pollution in this area by citing specific oil spills, gas flares, and pipeline breaks. The authors also give a detailed history of the actions committed by Shell and its henchmen within the Nigerian goverment in order to suppress the natives of the Niger Delta. These include outright lies to the local people, stalling action by forming committees, intimidation of local leaders, etc...

Overall, this book shows the worst of corporate greed within the 20th century. The book is well argued and easy to read with lots of references. I highly recommend it.

Over the top

The one good thing I will say is that this is essentially the only source of information about Shell and the conflict in Nigeria.

Unfortunately, it comes across as agenda-driven and biased. The authors make Shell employees out to be the evil landlords in the 1920s movies who twirl their mustaches and tie orphans to railroad tracks.

Everyone knows that Shell has taken advantage of a corrupt, rent-seeking government and they have been dangerously irresponsible with the environment that was entrusted to them. Everyone knows that they are making money, corrupt politicians are making money and overall, Shell being in Nigeria is not helping average Nigerians much. This book takes those problems and pushes their intent, criminal culpability and predisposition to evil past the limits of believability.

The authors have vested interests in the power struggles and they are not in any way objective, nor do they try to be so. Their agenda is pushed hard from page one.

In addition to a cartoonish view of Shell and their employees as evil vampires, the native Ogoni people are made out to be the exalted Noble Savages found in 19th century literature.

When you read this book, then read the newspaper, something doesn't connect. The people who are fighting Shell are simply local and regional gangland-style powerbrokers who are most likely a bigger threat to the Ogoni than Shell could ever hope to be, even at their mustache-twirling worst. It is hard to reconcile the author's view of the anti-Shell movements as being non-violent (a term constantly used to describe indigenous reaction) when some of these groups kidnap toddlers and hold them for ransom.

On the positive side, I learned more about Ken Saro-Wiwa from reading this book, which was good, but not much else in the book helped. Outisde of learning the names of some of the groups and getting dates to research further, this book is a waste of time.
