An Absolute Tour de Force for Wireless Power

This work is the definitive reference on wireless power transmission by radio waves. Shinohara is unmatched in his understanding and communication of both the fundamentals and the latest developments in this important and fascinating field. He buttresses this readable and well-organized presentation with an outstanding collection of references. Wireless power history, theory, sources, receivers, and applications are covered conscientiously and adroitly. The book answers common technical questions and connects disparate pieces, such as why rectenna arrays behave differently than ordinary antenna arrays and why a rectenna utilizing a single diode can outperform a four-diode bridge rectifier as well as why it can approach 100% efficiency.

The only minor shortcoming of the book is that it is not entirely up to date on U.S. SSP concepts in that it omits the Modular Symmetrical Concentrator (MSC) and Solar Power Satellite by means of Arbitrarily Large PHased Array (SPS-ALPHA) concepts. One can consult Mankins' "The
Case for Solar Power Satellites" for coverage of these.
