About the Author

Susan Norwood is a professor of nursing at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, where she teaches critical care nursing, professional nursing, ethics, and understanding suffering. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, her master’s degree from Boston College, and her PhD from Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, Ohio. She has been a practicing critical care nurse for over 30 years and a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses for nearly as long. She has published and presented in the areas of critical care nursing, nursing ethics, nursing history, suffering experienced by patients as well as health care providers, and conflict among members of the health care team.

A clear, user-friendly nursing statistics book

This was a required textbook for a graduate level nursing statistics course. The text's chapters are organized and provide a comprehensive overview of the different statistical tests. All provided examples are pulled directly from nursing research and are understandable. I found the end of chapter exercises to be helpful but unfortunately, explanations or rational to the answers were not provided in the explanation. While this textbook contributed to my understanding of course content I didn't find it to be a particularly good "reference book" and I don't imagine I'll refer to it again now that the course is over.

This is one of the most user-friendly statistics books I have ever purchased. The information and concepts are easy to understand with multiple examples. The specific subject in each chapter is highlighted for easy locating. There are additional tables in the back that can be used to solve problems. I highly recommend this book.

I am glad to have found this book after a long search

I am an Infectious disease fellow at University of Miami with special interest in Virology (HIV/HepatitisC/Influenza). I recently came across this book in global virology . I am glad to have found this book after a long search. It is the most concise yet comprehensive book on global virology yet. In todays flat world , virology is more global than ever. It offers an unique insight into the interplay of viral biology with host defenses in both micro and macromolecular levels. Its a must have and must read. Chapter 3 on adaptation of mosquito vectors , Chapter 6 on Surveillance for Hepatitis C and Chapter 25 on Mutational Immune Escape in HIV-1 are my favorites thus far. Some of the content was vividly novel and intriguing to me ( esp the chapter 21 on XMRV ) while other chapters on common viruses are explained in a new light both clinically and epidemiologically.

A magical book

"The Truthteller's Tale" and its prequel, "The Safekeeper's Secret" are both wonderful books and, although they are targeted to a young adult audience, I hope that doesn't stop adults (I'm almost 50) from picking up these gems. I've read some of Shinn's other books and, while they are very good, I don't think they have the magic of her young adult fantasy. She creates a world that is absolutely real and the pictures she draws with her words can break your heart (her writing reminds me of Alice Hoffman at times). I find it difficult to read a book where the characters are not sympathetic, no matter how well written. That is definitely not a problem with "Truthteller's Tale." Shinn has populated her little world with the most charming people imaginable. Adele and Eleda are twin sisters, one a Truth-Teller and the other a Safekeeper. They live in the small town of Merendon, and this book describes their friendship with a local merchant's daughter, Roelynn, her brother Micah, and their experiences with various characters, savory and otherwise, who pass through their small town. There are enough plots twists and little mysteries and romances to keep your interest throughout the book. Sharon Shinn must remember her own adolescent years very well, because the emotions and words of her characters ring true. They're enormously likable and very real.

For many years, I never even looked at young adult or children's books because I thought I had "outgrown" them. Then one day I heard an interview with Lois Lowry, which prompted me to pick up "The Giver." From there, I went on to J. K. Rowling, Jonathon Stroud and Libba Bray and returned to some of my favorite authors from childhood (Kate Seredy, Jack O'Brien, Chad Oliver, Madeleine L'Engle). I was reminded of how magical these books are, and how a good book never has a limited audience. "The Truthteller's Tale" is such a book. It deserves a place on the bookshelf with your other treasured books, to be savored and read again and again.

Lived Happily Ever After

This book is good for kids that like a story that follows the same plot line as the traditional fairy tale with a few twists. Happy endings all around, and mixed up identities told in a way that isn't too funny that it destroys the tale, but makes it interesting. This is different than the first book (the Safe-Keeper's Secret), but has more characters and depth to the story, making it a much better book than the first.

Great Plot; OK Story

Eleda and Adele are twins that contradict their appearences in an interesting way. Eleda is a truth-teller, someone who can only speak the truth and can hear when someone else is not. Adele is a safe-keeper, and will never tell a secret confided to her. The twins lives are written in two parts of the novel, the girls at ages 12 to 16, and the girls at the age of 17. In the 1st part Eleda and Adele go through memories of visits to the queen, summer romances and heartbreaks, their friend Roelynn, and sisterhood fights and bonding. Then at age 17, two interesting strangers come to stay at their father's Inn, starting a sequence of events that change the girls lives completely, and give them quite a number of life lessons in the process!

I liked this book, but it was not my ultimate favorites. I loved the set-up of the story, but the actual story didn't really follow through. I loved the creativity of having two opposite twins, with palindrome names and mirrored appearences. The writing style was fair, it flowed nicely but didn't exactly grab my attention. I wished the author would have involved the girls' gifts more often, that was my favorite part of the book.

Demetra George, halds a B.A. in Philosophy and M.A. Classics, received the 2002 Marion D. March Regulus Award for Theory and Understanding. A practitioner of astrology for over 30 years, she specializes in asteroids, archetypal mythology, and traditional astrology. She is also coauthor of the best-selling workbook Astrology for Yourself and Asteroid Goddesses with Douglas Bloch. Ms. George is the Director of THEMA: Foundations in Astrology which offers integrated programs and traveling symposia for individuals and small groups in the history, mythology, and techniques of Hellenistic and Archetypal astrology.

Douglas Bloch is a counselor and teacher and the author of ten books, including his inspirational self-help trilogy Words that Heal and I Am With You Always.

Astrology students need this book

How this book ever got out of print for a minute I do not know. All students of astrology need Demetra in their bookshelf and on their desk. An understanding of the asteroid goddesses is a way to add an entire new dimension to understanding the natal and other charts. Demetra understands the ladies in myth, history, and in the psyche, and she details, amazingly well, their meaning in the chart.
5 stars except that I wish the other asteroids were included ... The four main goddesses are here and understanding them is enough of a project for awhile ... but I wish we'd gotten the entire sisterhood ... probably they are around here somewhere ...
The great thing Demetra has done is add the presence of feminine values and concerns to the horoscope. Supporting the Moon, the asteroid goddesses have as their interest, relationship, hearth, romance, adventure, protection, nurture. No natal chart should be without them.

The quality of book compromised by the amount of filler.

I REALLY liked this book EXCEPT for the fact that the information on the minor asteroids was disappointingly skimpy. The author provided an excellent amount of information about the major asteroids, and so it was surprising to see how little information was given on the minor asteroids. If the author did not have enough information yet about the minor asteroids, I would rather she had left out the "junk" and had a thinner (and less expensive) volume. By "junk", I'm referring to the pages and pages of celebrities' asteroid placements. The endless lists about celebrities added nothing to the reader's enlightenment on the subject, and I don't share our culture's fascination with celebrities. If the filler was the publisher's decision - perhaps to leave the opportunity for another book (sale), then I am very disappointed in that publisher. Publishers of astrology books usually give fair value for the price of their books. Had I seen the book (in a book store), I would have been conflicted about buying it. The topic is new and fascinating, but there is just too much filler. As it now stands, the book is really worth about $13 or $14 at most. If the author were to remove the filler and add the same quality of information about the minor asteroids as she has for the major asteroids, the book would be worth the current price.

an instant classic

Demetra George's contribution to the field of Astrology is monumental, to say the very least. This material came along at a time when women were actively seeking new roles in society and thus it is evidence of the divine inspiration reflected in the ancient Hermetic maxim: "As above, so below; As without, so within." This is absolutely a seminal work of gigantic implications.

This material forces the modern astrologer to grapple with complex socio-political questions. If Astrology is truly a symbolic language to describe and give meaning to our Lives, should not the stories we populate with this language reflect the populations we see in our everyday lives? The facts are that the 10 planet modern astrology which became the norm in the last century has a 4:1 bias toward male figures!

After the discovery of Uranus in the Age of Enlightenment -and the subsequent pronouncement that all MEN are created equal -we had the discovery of Ceres and the other Goddesses. Ever since then, we have been collectively struggling to re-integrate the splintered Feminine via women's rights and minority rights. It has been a long slow slog, however.

Believe it or not, it wasn't until the 1970's that anyone came up with the idea that men and women could actually have qualities of the opposite gender (and still be OK). In the mid-1970's Sandra Bem revolutionized psychology with a new personality theory. Instead of masculinity and femininity traits being seen in the traditional light as dichotomous endpoints of a single continuum, Bem proposed they be seen independently and that individuals may possess varying degrees of each trait regardless of biological sex.

Interestingly, it was in this same decade that modern astrologers began compiling ephemeredes of the asteroid Goddesses. By the 1980's Demetra George's seminal work Asteroid Goddesses made possible in astrology the movement toward balance which psychology was struggling to embrace. If you include these 4 exiled Olympian Goddesses in the Horoscope, then you now have a 15 planet astrology (10 planets plus Chiron and the Goddesses) with somewhat more equal numbers of guys and gals (9 to 6). In other words, you have a modern astrology which reflects the reality of modern life since at least the 70's. Women have begun to achieve significantly more power and visibility, but are still clearly biased against via such factors as the glass ceiling.

I can tell you as a professional astrologer that working with this material has absolutely been one of the most transformative and liberative processes I have experienced. I offer much thanksgiving to the Goddess for manifesting through Demetra and honor the many doors that she opened with this work.

I was dumbfounded when I finished the book. Mr Shekar has come up with one of the most potent management concepts of our time.
