Klara Hobza's The New Millennium Paper Airplane Book is a collection of some of the artist's favorite paper airplanes and stories by their creators, gathered from The New Millennium Paper Airplane Contest exhibition, held at the New York Hall of Science in Queens, New York, in 2008. This project was itself an homage to the historic paper airplane contest that took place in 1967 at the same venue--which, in a note of minor irony, was built to display rockets for the 1964 World's Fair. The competition was open to the public, and participants were invited to fly their planes in a number of judging categories including distance flown, duration aloft, beauty, spectacular failure and children's designs. For this book, Hobza has also included some additional paper airplane contributions from fellow enthusiasts met along the way. Each page within the book is designed to be torn out and folded into a paper airplane. A complete list of step-by-step folding instructions is also included, so you can remake your favorites.

Don't waste your money

If you want a book that tells you how to build flying paper airplanes, this book is not for you. Some of the designs do not fly and in at least one case, the contributor tells you that he is unsuccessful in making paper airplanes. I am not sure how the author selected her contributors but it certainly wasn't based on knowledge of how to make a flyable paper airplane. In one case, one design is repeated twice and only the name of the contributor is changed. I am really not interested in who designed the plane...all I want is a design that I can use to create a flyable plane. The quality of instruction is very poor. Line drawings are provided but the size of the paper needed in most cases is not included. In one case, the design on the removable sheet was printed off center so if you fold the plane using that sheet, the plane will be lopsided. The instructions at best will require a trial and error technique to determine what is shown on the sketchy drawings.

Twenty innovative houses engendered by the collaboration between Hungarian-born Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer (1902-81) and American architect Herbert Beckhard (b. 1926) are examined in this handsome volume. Breuer (famous for the eponymous chair he designed), who emigrated to the U.S. in 1937, and Beckhard, who now heads a Manhattan-based architectural firm, favored large, open interior spaces, fieldstone walls, uninterrupted glazed surfaces and structures that "float" above their sites by means of posts, trusses and supporting walls. Despite these similarities, the houses they designed together, in California, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Switzerland, are highly individualistic, modernist compositions reflecting their clients' lifestyles. Masello, a contributor to Architectural Record , affectionately walks readers through these eclectic, deliberately asymmetrical dwellings, aided by 100 black-and-white photographs and 16 pages in color.

A Must Read for an Architecture Enthusiast

An in-depth analysis of collaborated works between Marcel Breur & Herbert Beckhard through their professional lives together. They are conveyed as architects who get along well with one another both professionally & personally. Marcel Breur is depicted as an architect that didn't want to force his idea upon his clients but respecting their wishes despite in some instances, that compromised with his vision of how the final outcome should be like. Ironically, thru interaction with his clients that his greatest works are produced which are discussed in detail in this book. A chapter is dedicated for every & each houses that are worth mentioning. We are told of Japanese influence upon their work, the usage of natural material in their works i.e the international style buildings which are rampant during their time. All the works are displayed in black & white photos but towards the end, colour photos are shown & that's when everything hit you as you're able to see the buildings from the other perspective. Morevoer, building layouts are provided as well. I guess the exclusion of colour in the beginning is enabling us to appreciate the form more rather than been confused with the detraction, ie. colour. To be honest, it works well in this instance. I also enjoy the layout of the book. It is easy to read, and informative. In a way, this is a semi-biography book of those 2 famous architects. Towards the end, it's heart touching to read about Herbert's reflection on the day when Marcel handed him a note, wanted him to announce to the firm that he would be retiring thereafter. It's interesting also to read about Richard Meier's beginning in Marcel's firm as well.

A highly illuminating and accessible book.

So many architectural books can get lost in jargon, but this one never does. It's extremely readable, and its insights into the work and careers of Marcel Breuer and Herbert Beckhard are always on point and thought-provoking. The book also happens to be handsomely produced, with lots of back-and-white and color photographs of their finished work. This book is essential, I think, as a reference, and a pleasure to read throughout.

Already with a 2009 handbook in my library I felt a fair amount of reluctance to buy the 2010 edition. But the promise of fresher material, more information, and a nice price cut to roll the puppy out and start the buzz moved me to purchase the "ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications 2010." After reviewing the massive volume I deem the outlay as money well spent. It made a good addition to my ham shack. The 2010 handbook differs from prior yearly editions in not recycling massive amounts of the same old material or cut-and-pasting work out of QST. This 2010 edition also shows better production and editing attention than some recent ARRL publications. If you don't own a handbook, but do maintain a passion, temperament, or inclination to use amateur radio, and if you possess the cash to comfortably do so, no question about it, you should get a copy of this book. If you are a ham and have one, say no more than five years old, your level and type of involvement will be your guide. If you are into new radio and antenna designs, use new techniques, or want to upgrade your own knowledge of the once esoteric modes that rapidly become bread-and-butter in amateur radio, then I'd suggest this handbook constitutes a reasonable purchase.

Great, as expected.

First day here it saved me a lot of research for a circuit. Older doesn't matter if you're looking for basic electronics, they haven't changed much since tube days. This introduced me to a particular transistor I hadn't used before, but my prototype is working great.

The definitive guide for anybody interested in radio's technical foundations

I don't work in the radio industry although have had a life-long fascination with the topic. If you've ever wondered how radio works, and I mean truly works from a technical perspective, this book is required reading. It is simply massive in scope, covering topics such as electronic theory fundamentals, antenna design, electronic component design, and much, much, much more.

Apparently a new edition of this book is revised and released annually, and it shows. The quality of writing and attention to detail is obvious from the first page.

Highly recommended, and I'd imagine an indispensable resource for anybody interested in making a career or hobby out of radio.
