the best english language capoeira book to date

the title of this review may be a surprise to some, considering that greg downey is neither brazilian, nor has he really spent a huge amount of time studying capoeira (no more than five years, if i recall, and only with a medium intensity). and yet, this book was a better read than almost any other capoeira book i have ever read in english (i own them all up until the date of this writing, nov 2005). this is, of course, not to take away from nestor capoeira or mestre acordeon's books. both of these authors have produced valuable additions to a capoeirista's library and should be picked up as well.

this book does not teach you moves but, then again, capoeira has never really been about moves; it is about moving. greg downey guides you through what it is like to learn capoeira, and what it is like to see through the eyes of someone who has gained experience in the game and learned to see with the eyes of a malandro, shows you how you will be changed if you go deep into the game. there are quotes from joao pequeno, joao grande, mestre moraes, as well as many other renowned mestres of capoeira, and lots of great stories.

downey's book is based upon experience with capoeira angola with GCAP in bahia, and you may find yourself more attracted to it if you practice angola, rather than regional or contemporary capoeira. but whatever you play, you will probably learn a lot from this book. i for one am very happy i picked it up, and have passed it on to my contra-mestra. i am confident she will enjoy it as well.

Less insightful than hoped from the title. I was ...

Less insightful than hoped from the title. I was exposed to capoeira earlier in the US, visited masters in Salvador myself as well, and didn't really pick up any real insight. There is a lot of the author's not so interesting individual story, and despite protestations, it's quite narrow minded, even party line myth on occasions with his personal group and teacher affiliation.

Slow and Underlined

This book took almost an entire month to arrive at my residence. Had I ventured to pick the book up on foot, I could have received it faster. Many notes were highlighted, which is to be assumed a possibility for a used book. I was seriously disappointed by the arrival time. Usually I receive my orders from amazon in the minimal amount of approximated time.

This book made my boys very eager for a real life snowy day!

We discovered Kipper by way of the Nick Jr. TV show, and were very glad to find how very well done the Kipper books are. This simple but very pleasing tale of Kipper and Tiger enjoying the snow really is a popular one in our house. They love hearing about the dogs rolling down the hill, Tiger being sure the snow will be gone soon, and the dogs making their version of snow animals. Recently when we got a good sized snow, both of my boys acted out a lot of what they had heard in this book in the real snow!

A Great Children's Book for All Seasons, Not Just Winter

In this fun and cheery book, Kipper awakens to find that it has snowed outside. Grabbing his scarf, he heads outside to explore the new-fallen snow. Soon, he's making tracks and snow dogs all across the garden. He ventures to Big Hill, where he finds his friend Tiger. Tiger is dressed in silly clothes that the snow sticks to. Kipper shows his snow dog game to Tiger, but Tiger is unable to get up, and soon he's rolling head over heels down the hill. Instead of being scared, Tiger enjoys this activity very much. Tiger and Kipper spend the rest of their day rolling down the hill, and they build a huge snow dog at the bottom.

This is an excellent book for preschool children. The story is very fun, and the pictures are bright and colorful. My children are big fans of the Kipper television show, and this is one of their favorite books to hear when going to bed. I highly recommend this fun book. Your children will enjoy watching Tiger and Kipper play in the snow.

I enjoyed this book very much. This book reminded me of all the fun times my friends and I had when we were younger. I liked this book also, because of the things that Kipper, and Tiger do together, they make their own fun. Even though Tiger dos not like the silly woolly snow suit, they make it funny. I liked when they were rolling down the hill, then how they used all the snow to make a dog.
Kipper and Tiger will always find ways to have fun. This great variety of books as well as the television series, and movies that have been made, Kipper is vey popular. I would recommend this book for children ages 2-8, because I think anyone can enjoy this book.

Another Great Agatha Christie

Mrs. McGinty's Dead: Hercule Poirot Investigates is the usual interesting, suspenseful read by Agatha Christie. I love her books and always enjoy reading them. The only difficulty I found with the book was the long list of possible suspects who all seemed to be a Mrs. Had trouble keeping track of them after a while. However once again I was surprised when the culprit was finally revealed. Another great Christie book.

Best of the Three Volume Set...

Morris Kline is one of the best math writers of all time. His books are intended for folks with only the most basic math, and he then uses physical and intuitive analogies to explain what's going on "beneath" the equations. MANY of his books are now available in inexpensive Dover editions like this one, just put Morris Kline in the search bar at the top of any Amazon page!

This book starts with "modern" topics like projective geometry after leaving off with calculus in the second volume. Like his intuitive calculus book, it also reads like an adventure novel! This is a MUST buy if you're interested in the history of math. His Mathematics and the Physical World book (Mathematics and the Physical World (Dover books explaining science)) is one of the all time best introductions to advanced math ever written, from High School to beginning undergrad. ALL his books make any other text MUCH more clear, due to his wonderful "real world" examples and palpable enthusiasm.

The cool thing is that, unlike his books written in the 60's, this volume was 1990, just at the "reincarnation" of projective geometry and other "historical" math phenomena like quaternions, in new trends like video games and 3D computer animation. Still very relevant, and one of the best ways to learn more advanced math, due to Kline's wonderful teaching style, intuitive explanations, and comparisons with "everyday" physical happenings that FINALLY (at least in my case) helps you get what that equation really "means!"

If you see reviews trashing this or any other math book due to Kindle, don't fault the book! In general ALL e-readers (not just Kindle) still have trouble with LaTex, especially older "scanned" texts! If the book has complex exponential equations, just assume they'll be problematic as e-books, especially if the edition is pre-2005. Of course I agree with reviewers who point this out, but it is sad that it effects the overall rating of the BOOKS themselves, which deserve many more stars!!!

Exactly what I expected

A thorough exposition of the history of mathematics for mathematicians. For non-mathematicians, I recommend Mathematics for the Nonmathematician by the same author. This will be more accessible to the layperson.

Cute Christmas Story

This is a cute Christmas story about two completely opposite people that, with all the right twists and turns, find out that all they ever wanted was right in front of them. Easy to read, and hard to put down, I was a bit sad to see it end. It was very easy to visualize the characters with the descriptions given by the author. Can't wait to read more of her stories.

Perfect for the holidays...

I truly enjoyed reading this light-hearted story about love at Christmas time. It was very easy to follow and I found at times I was sad, then laughing and always anticipating what would happen next. I have a tween daughter who is reading it now and she is really enjoying the book. I think the author did a great job!

A Precious little Christmas story.

This story will make you smile and remind you of the innocent childlike love of Christmas. It was a fun, lighthearted story of capturing the magic of the Holidays. Will definately get you in the Holiday mood.
