A Great Character

This is the second book in Shona Husk's Arcane series; however, I haven't read the first book, Dark Vow, and I don't think you need to either to enjoy Dark Secrets.

This book is touted as a "Western-style fantasy". I wasn't entirely sure what to expect of that categorization. I mean, I don't particularly like Westerns. Or really, y'know, at all. Reading Deadwood (which is what comes to mind when I think of Westerns) was nothing short of painful for me. So there was trepidation. But this book seems to have taken all the best elements of Westerns and left the more annoying traits behind. You've got lawmen that are unchallenged powers, taverns full of sin, sympathetic prostitutes, demure womenfolk, codes of honor, normalized violence, and a Wild West setting. With magic. And apparently there's this whole genre of "weird Westerns" that wasn't even on my radar, which makes me wonder if I could learn to like cowboys, after all.

Something to consider. For now, I'll just focus on Shona Husk's writing because I know I at least like that. And do I, ever. When I first read the synopsis of the book, I was immediately intrigued. (The whole Western element didn't become apparent until I already had the book.) And this is one of those happy occasions when I can report that my enjoyment of the story completely met my expectations, and then some.

What I liked most was the thorough and intricate world-building. There's a complete reality presented here–‒one with its own language, customs, and social structure. The details are everywhere, yet their placement in the story is so matter-of-fact that you don't question their exoticism. Which is my favorite way to approach a fantasy setting. I appreciate the fact that the author doesn't spend too much time explaining this world; rather, she lets the descriptions and explanations unfold naturally in the course of the story.

The other strong suit at work is Haidyn. He's a very compelling protagonist and an effective narrative lens. It's impossible not to sympathize with him. Like a downtrodden prince, he has a dashing personality that just barely masks a wealth of regret and world-weariness. Moreover, his self-reproach is poignant and endearing. He's a man that's made bad choices, and he knows it. But even when life is kicking him in the teeth, he refuses to go down completely. And he never stops being a good person, no matter his circumstances.

As you may be picking up, this isn't an entirely happy book. While I wouldn't go so far as to call it dark fantasy, there's a definite edge at work that keeps things uncomfortable. It's a constant thread of fear and degeneration coursing through every character, every scene. Nothing to shy away from, mind you. Rather, it keeps the sense of urgency going strong until the very end, when everyone–‒reader included–‒feels like they can finally take a full breath.

Edgy Wild West Fantasy

First up, the cover is perfect for the story. It's told first person by the hero Haidyn. Or maybe he's a bit of an anti-hero? Either way, he has that brooding sexy look of the cover.

The story is dark, intense, but a romance. I had to read on and know how things turned out. *By romance, I mean love is motivational and there is a happy ending - I hope that's not a spoiler?

Because I'd read "Dark Vow", I knew the world of "Dark Secrets". It's an intriguing and unique world. Wild West with a fantasy edgy steampunkish vibe. The book has style.

Light on the romance, heavy on the personal growth

I’ve read six books in the past week, three of which are being released today and I now have to review. And because my procrastination likes to have real world consequences, two of those books I really wish I had more time to think about.

Dark Secrets is the first such book.

I read Dark Secrets first, partially because I liked the premise of the book, partially because I was in the mood for fantasy, but mostly because I lurve Shona Husk. If you have a chance to read her Shadowlands series, do so, because that series is off the bleedin' chain.

So going into this book I had high hopes for a quick little romance read set in a fantasy world with magic and patron gods and miscellaneous other good things.

Allow me to spare you some confusion. This book isn’t really a romance. I mean yes, the main characters actions are prompted by his love for what was basically his high school sweetheart, but that’s basically it. You get a few interactions, and his sucker punch realization that this is the woman he has always and will always love. Very little in the way of developing hearts and budding flowers.

Does this take away from the story?

Not even a little bit.

Instead you get this fascinating look at what one man who’s sold his morals to the highest bidder and what he does post sucker punch. You get to look at the workings of this flawed government system. Of its dirty officials, skewed morals, and rather err… flexible laws.

Was it the romance I wanted? No. Was it a fantastic fantasy (yes I giggled when I typed that) that I thoroughly enjoyed? Heck yes.

3.5 Stars. Mild romantic elements with heavy mind altering magic use. Fun for the whole family. If your family is okay reading about pleasure houses.

Actually… Forget I mentioned families.

As a side note, I picked this up without reading book one in the series. There were parts where I was like “the effe…” in reference to the world and it’s magic, but not so bad that I wasn’t able to piece things together.

The neo-liberal economic policies—privatization, free trade, slashed social spending—that the Chicago School and the economist Milton Friedman have foisted on the world are catastrophic in two senses, argues this vigorous polemic. Because their results are disastrous—depressions, mass poverty, private corporations looting public wealth, by the author's accounting—their means must be cataclysmic, dependent on political upheavals and natural disasters as coercive pretexts for free-market reforms the public would normally reject. Journalist Klein (No Logo) chronicles decades of such disasters, including the Chicago School makeovers launched by South American coups; the corrupt sale of Russia's state economy to oligarchs following the collapse of the Soviet Union; the privatization of New Orleans's public schools after Katrina; and the seizure of wrecked fishing villages by resort developers after the Asian tsunami. Klein's economic and political analyses are not always meticulous. Likening free-market shock therapies to electroshock torture, she conflates every misdeed of right-wing dictatorships with their economic programs and paints a too simplistic picture of the Iraq conflict as a struggle over American-imposed neo-liberalism. The author of No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies, Klein links disparate events throughout the 20th and 21st centuries—the collapse of the Soviet Union, the atrocities in Chile under Pinochet, the post-tsunami crises in Sri Lanka, 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the invasion of Iraq—to reveal the two-faced nature of capitalism. Critics agreed that the book—accessible and impeccably researched—is an important contribution to the debate over globalization. Some were less taken with Klein’s thesis, however. The Washington Post noted that Klein sees too many conspiracies instead of "the all-too-human pattern of chaos and confusion, good intentions and greed, playing out in the wake of catastrophes." Fantastic and Scary Book

This is a very good book indeed. It is powerful, eye-opening, and disturbing. Kline gives a gripping narative for the most part. I say for the most part because sometimes the narative seems repetitive. The book also appears to be well documented.

Naomi Kline paints a picture of how the corporate world, neoliberal economists, and polticians worked to take advantage of communities and countries in shock because of some calamity—political, economic, and natural. They move in and inact free-trade, drastric cuts in govenrment, reduced taxes (for the rich), dump price controls, and deregulation. These changes benefit no one except the rich, the poltical leaders, and foreign corporations, who are aften one and the same. The poor in these places go from worse to worser.

The book begins with shock treatment experiments funded by the CIA with possible applications to interagation. The idea was to wipe a person brain clean. They also developed sensory deprivation, and thus acting together to destroy the self to be built anew. The next preliminary topic is the Chicago School Economics led by Milton Freedman at the University of Chicago which developed neoliberalism, which to me is a misnomer, seeing how it is a very conservative doctrine.

The book, then moves on to the historical picture to see how these ideas were practice in the real world outside of the academy. South America is presented with the shock of political upheaval, starting with Chile. Also in South America, it discusses the debt crisises that occurred following the ouster of strong arm governments. It covers Poland, Russia, and South Africa with their peaceful transfer of power with the economic shift inserted in with little notice, putting the poor in dire straits. It also goes into United States' shocks. One is the Iraq war after 9/11 and the privatization of war. Privatization is also shown to be at work in the hurricane Katrina disaster to the detriment of the New Orleans poor. Coverage is given to the Asian Tiger's financial currency debacle and the recovery from the Tsunami that hit many coastal areas in the Indian ocean basin in 2004.

In the last section, Kline does hold out some hopefulness, as she describes people's efforts in recent years to counter the neoliberals and corporatists to take over of many country's economies.

I recommend this book, especially for those who have a concern for the poor. It should be of interest to others interested in how modern economic theory affects the world.with the economic shift inserted in with little notice, putting the poor in dire straits. A Prophetic Blueprint for an Imperfect World

This is one of the most important books I've ever read, with more information, analysis and explanations packed into its 700 pages than several other books I can think of combined. The chapters on Russia, Poland and Israel could easily be full-length books in themselves. Klein’s book is written in a brilliant journalistic style, with all the dots being connected, nothing left dangling, no strings unattached. The footnotes alone explain more about the dystopian world view of Milton Friedman than you'll find in other books. Even the "acknowledgment" section at the end is more interesting than most book reviews published in the Sunday edition of the New York Times.

And when I finished the “Shock Doctrine”, I realized it was published before the financial meltdown and crash of 2008, before Obama’s first term, before drone assassinations, before Edward Snowden's NSA whistleblowing, before Greece and the financial crisis with the EU, reconstruction demands from the World Bank, Germany, the IMF; before the regime change of Lybia, before ISIS, wars in Syria, Yemen, Ukraine; before the oil glut destroyed international economic stability, and long before the 2016 presidential election.

But Klein's book is a perfect fit in an imperfect world, a perfect prophetic blueprint for what has come before now, what came after, and what may probably come in the near future.

Essential reading, The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein:
This is a well-researched book that explains the Milton Friedman-based ideals/agenda of the Military Industrial Complex:

1) Privatization (all resources/production taken from the public/government and put into the hands of corporations)
2) Government deregulation (no controls/restrictions on those corporations - no FDA or EPA, no health/safety rules, no anti-trust laws, minimum wage, taxes or restrictions on fraud and price gouging)
3) No social spending (everything for the corps, nothing for the people).
AND not just for the U.S., but worldwide.

In the U.S., champions of the Friedman doctrine have been successful at privatizing the military, prisons, banking, and are hard at work attempting to take public lands (national parks), the post office and the educational system. In every country that has fallen to fascist Corporatism economics, it's been disastrous for the population. The book has numerous examples of the unconscionable lengths to which these factions will stoop in order to advance their power, ownership and control.

The book also details how disasters have been exploited in order to quickly wrest control of desirable property out of the hands of stunned populations (New Orleans-Katrina, Sri Lanka tsunami, 911/Iraq oil, etc). I suspect this is the true explanation for the geo-engineered weather project... rather than to mitigate global warming - it may be intentionally designed to create disasters that drive populations off their lands, forcing people to sell to Corporatists who rebuild purely for profit motives, permanently displacing the former inhabitants.

About the Author

Looby has been teaching permaculture since 2002, and is partner of a leading teaching and consultancy partnership, Designed Visions (www.designedvisions.com). She runs full permaculture design courses as well as teacher training, advanced permaculture design and peoplecare courses. Looby travels to Nepal to support the Himalayan Permaculture Centre and has founded a Fair Trade business, Spirals of Abundance, importing organic cotton clothes and other Nepalese handicrafts. She has supported the development and growth of permaculture nationally through her input as trustee of the Permaculture Association (Britain) for 5 years (2001-2006) and was the Chairperson for two of these. Looby lives in Herefordshire with her partner Chris Evans and two daughters. She enjoys singing, yoga, gardening and making all sorts of things from cakes to wine and clothes to blankets. I haven't finished this book yet. Still, I've looked all through it and read part way. This is just one of the best books I've come across and the reason I'm only part-way through it is because I'm taking the time to think over each section and keep a notebook of my encounter. I'm recommending it to my book group because I think it will be even more extraordinary to share the thoughts and reactions of others to it.

Great review for NCLEX.

Loved this book! It was actually fun to read and not boring. It helped prepare me for the nclex tremendously. Passed my first time with 75 questions! It has a great review chapter and always has tips on how to answer questions. It comes with a ton of questions in the back of the book and also a CD. I would definitely recommend it.

Oshry takes a innovative approach for describing complexity. It is unique. By using simple graphics, and narrative explanations the arcane world of organizational systems comes to life.

eye opening psychological perspective

While I don't come from a psychoanalytic bent, Oshry provides very useful constructs for understanding and reflecting on the organization. Seen from a systems perspective he describes inter-relationships of groups as a series of systems, almost as an engineering metaphor. We are not a group of individual psychologies interacting with one another. Each individual is part of some system. The psychological mindset each comes with is affected by the system that person is a part of. While we are set in our mindset, we will think and act differently, depending on the system we are a part of. The system determines our behavior, to an extent. Very useful. Good work to ponder, incorporate, and utilize to effect change.

Great stuff

Before I left the corporate world, I was convinced that often our need to always remain under the reductionist hat severely limits our ability to truly understand a problem as well as secure the future. How many times have you interacted with your organization with other departments who fend only for themselves? Other questions arise that demand systems thinking approach such any policies, general politics even accounting procedures that often take a reductionist view of an organization. This was a great book to start training the eyes to see the forest rather than the tree.

About the Author
Bob O'Hara is a co-founder of Airespace, a venture-funded startup company that is leading the IEEE 802.11 industry into the second stage of wireless local area network (WLAN) evolution. He is actively involved in the development of networking, telecommunications, and computing standards and products. His areas of expertise are network and communication protocols and their implementation, operating systems, system specification and integration, standards development, cryptography and its application, strategy development, and product definition. Mr. O'Hara has been involved with the development of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard since 1992. He was the technical editor of that standard and chairman of the revisions and regulatory extensions tasks groups. He is currently chairman of the maintenance and task group. In 2004, he was selected of one of the fifty most powerful people in networking by Network World.

Al Petrick is vice president of marketing and business development at WiDeFi, a fabless semiconductor company developing 802.11 WiFi® semiconductors for the wireless consumer electronics market. Mr. Petrick's experience includes over 23 years of combined marketing and systems engineering in wireless communications and semiconductor technology. Prior to WiDeFi, he held executive management marketing and business development positions at Icefyre and Intersil. At Intersil, now Conexant, formally Harris Semiconductor, he pioneered the PRISM WLAN chipset from inception into a successful Wi-Fi product line. Mr. Petrick serves as vice chairman of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN Working Group. Mr Petrick co-authored with Bob O'Hara  the first edition of the IEEE 802.11 Handbook: A Designer's Companion. He serves on a number of advisory boards for Wi-Fi product companies.

I received my copy of the IEEE 802.11 Handbook 2nd edition on April 1st, 2005. All experienced Wi-Fi professionals should have this book and those new to Wi-Fi should learn the basics elsewhere.

What follows is a comparison of the two editions.

The same two authors are credited with authoring both editions. Both have significant IEEE 802.11 standards committee histories and business involvements. The authors dedicated the 1st edition to their parents and the 2nd to their wives. Times change.

The 2nd has twice as many pages, and is twice as thick. It is an extra inch wide and tall but with a larger font that results in the same amount of information on each page. Thus the content looks to have doubled.

All the old chapters are carried forward with nominal changes. The 2nd has a very modest glossary and a decent index; the 1st had neither.

New chapters in the 2nd include 802.11i, 802.11e, 802.11h, 802.11d, 802.11F, 802.11j, 802.11g, and 802.11n, in that order but mingled with the old chapters. The entirely new chapters are 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15.

Virtually all the graphics of the 1st are carried forward in the 2nd and most became grainier. Most typos and awkward English in the 1st are corrected in the 2nd.

Someone formatting the 2nd went overboard globally replacing words and phrases with acronyms or abbreviations. For example all instances of "station" became "STA" regardless of context.

Most other changes are additional paragraphs or additional sentences added to existing paragraphs. Rarely is a sentence modified. Here are the 2nd edition pages that have changes in the chapters carried over from the 1st: 5, 14, 26, 27, 33-34, 40, 52-55, 57, 60-72, 74-86, 89, 92-93, 223, 225-226, 228, 239-240, 258-260, 267, 271, 273, 275-284, 289-290, 344-347. If you have a 1st edition you can match the paragraphs up with the 2nd edition and the new material will jump off the page.

The result is a mix of voices from 1999 and 2005. Understanding this makes it easier to forgive a leftover remark from 1999 that would be a glaring mistake if penned in 2005.

The Handbook is seldom technically wrong. The 1st edition introduced language not found in the IEEE 802.11 standard that can both help and hinder accurate understanding of the technology. None of this was improved on in the 2nd edition.

The 1st edition was my only 802.11 resource for several years. When I began reading the IEEE 802.11 document and its amendments I had to stop reading the Handbook in order to not confuse the two. Perhaps one day I can write about what I would wish to see changed in a third edition.

I found the 2nd edition new chapters to be very informative and alone worth the price of the book. So enjoy -- but be careful.

Concise 802.11 protocol overview, no fluff, poorly written

If you are an engineer with need to quickly understand the details of the 802.11 protocol, but do not want to plow through hundreds of pages of the IEEE specification, this book is for you. It is a good concise treatment of the details of the protocol. It is written for practicing telecommunications engineers. It is not 'wireless 101' and it is not for someone who wants to know how to set up a home or enterprise 802.11 network. It does not describe what unratified (as of this writing) 802.11e, 802.11 g, 802.11i specs are. It does cover the 802.11a and 802.11b phy layer descriptions.
Unfortunately, the lack of a detailed Table of Contents, lack of any index at all, a super sparce list of acronyms hurt the readability. This also makes its use as a quick reference not so quick. I also think that the figures are too simple and that better use of detailed figures would help the book considerably. However, the actual IEEE spec has very good figures. This book and the IEEE spec are side by side companions on my bookshelf and complement each other nicely.
I have found other books to date on the subject much too soft as far as technical detail on the protocol mechanisms. The authors participated in the design of 802.11 and know how to present the most salient features for embedded engineers. If you want a concise explanation of the 802.11 spec, and already have a fundamental understanding of how ethernet works, this is the book for you. So, I give it 4/5 stars on applicability of this content, but not for literary style and construct.
