A good book, but not what I was looking for.

If you're looking for a text that will give you a rundown of the history of Christian education, the major theories and the theorists behind them, etc. then this would be a great text. What I was looking for was a text that will give me some takeaway action points to help me out with my first job teaching a youth class on basic Christian doctrine. The description on the product page king of lead me to think this book would accomplish that goal, and I was left disappointed in that regard. It did well what it does, but it just wasn't what I was expecting.

Well-written and engaging

This book will be useful to students of immigration, history, and political science. Tichenor shows us the complex set of connections between political institutions, interest groups, and political actors that combined to produce policy outcomes.

One of his most interesting findings regards the unusual fact that while most Americans favor tighter restrictions on immigration, politicians nowadays rarely enact such laws. Instead they usually increase immigration levels despite broad public opposition. Tichenor argues that this is because a "policy regime" has been structured over time, encompassing the immigration committees in both houses of Congress, and including the preferences of strong pro-immigration interest groups, that pushes for liberalization of immigration laws.

Only rarely in American history do restrictionists succeed in limiting immigration, most notably from the 1920's until the landmark 1964 law that set off the wave of immigrants from Latin America and Asia we still experience today. Tichenor's work is easily accessible, well-written, and thought provoking.

The Shifting Sand of Immigration politics

My friends at CHIRLA gave me this book and at 300 pages of small print it looked intimidating so I put off reading it for a few weeks. When I finally picked it up I found it to be well organized, informative and a compelling read.

Tichenor tells the history of immigration politics in the America by showing the shifting alliances of groups and their interest in the level of immigration and the rights that should be given to immigrants. He uses a simple two by two grid throughout the book to illustrate this changing alliance. For instance the labor movement went from pro-immigrant around 1890 to anti-immigrant for most of the 20th century and became pro-immigrant again in the 1980's.

Dividing Lines also shows difference in the politics of legislation versus enforcement and between what the public says they want and what the politicians actually enact. For instance the book shows why we have laws mandating employer sanctions and yet we have almost no enforcement of those laws by the executive branch.

This book is an excellent read about the politics of immigration and should be considered by everyone who wants to understand the current state of immigration politics.

Linda Tirado is a completely average American with two kids. She has worked as a general manager at a Burger King and until just recently worked as a night cook at Ihop and as a voting rights activist for a disability nonprofit. She also writes essays on poverty and class issues. She lives in Enoch, Utah, with her husband and children. This is her first book.

Tirado goes from funny to angry in 0.2 seconds because poverty is bleak, requiring the 'stamina of Sisyphus' to keep going.

Why do poor people do things that seem so self-destructive? When 32-year-old Linda Tirado, a college student, wife and working mother of two, responded to this question on an online discussion board in the fall of 2013, her stirring personal post entitled “Why I Make Terrible Decisions, or, poverty thoughts," went viral and sparked heated community discussions about poor people’s individual and collective work ethics, motivations, food choices, childrearing, health practices, mental states and even sex lives.

Many supporters, including Barbara Ehrenreich, author of NICKEL AND DIMED: On (Not) Getting By in America, "felt an enormous wave of vindication" upon reading Tirado's words. And in the foreword of HAND TO MOUTH: Living in Bootstrap America, Ehrenreich praises Tirado for openly and unabashedly sharing the daily realities of her life as a low-wage worker and demonstrating "that poverty is not a ‘culture’ or a character defect; it is a shortage of money.”

"I am doing what I can to walk you through what it is to be poor," writes Tirado. She recalls in her mid-20s holding three jobs as a bartender (a boss offered female workers better shifts if they agreed to service him sexually), waitress (the baseline hourly wage for waiting tables was $2.13, and new staff got the slower shifts) and voter registration canvasser. The soul-killing experience, Tirado laments, "nearly killed me, and I still didn't break twenty grand that year."

Tirado describes the fundamental lack of job security and basic benefits in the food service industry, such as paid sick leave and health insurance. "As a general manager for a chain restaurant, I got eight days of maternity leave after I had my second daughter. Unpaid." She reports on hazardous working conditions ("Most kitchens in the middle of the summer are intolerable, with temperatures well into the triple digits. I've seen people sent to the hospital with heatstroke") and recounts her own mishaps ("My arms and hands are covered in scars from the fryers. Oil at nearly 400 degrees doesn’t tickle when it hits your skin, and you can’t avoid the spatter entirely. I’ve burned my hands because the oven gloves had worn through and the owners were too cheap to spring for another pair. I’ve sliced my fingers open nearly to the bone when knives have slipped”).

Tirado also offers these provocative comments to privileged folk: “You don’t need a titanium stroller” and “Science disapproves of your anti-bacterial-spray fetish.” In relating her story, Tirado goes from funny (“You can’t pay a doctor in chickens anymore”) to angry (“It’s pretty enraging to poor people when rich people, who get preventative care and can afford vitamins and gym memberships, look down on us as if we don’t have a clue how to take care of our bodies. We know --- we just can’t afford it”) in 0.2 seconds. And understandably so, because poverty is downright bleak, requiring the “stamina of Sisyphus” to keep going.

The Anger of Poverty

Imagine the angry comedian Lewis Black (or if you remember him, Sam Kinison) telling you, at length, what's the matter with this country that he's stuck in low wage work and has little hope of ever improving his situation. That's Linda Tirado -- angry, funny, erudite, working poor.

Ever heard someone ask why poor people eat so much junk food or why they don't take better care of themselves or why they make such bad life decisions. Tirado has answers and she doesn't hold back. She stays angry because the alternative is to give up to depression. Anger is a better choice, as long as she has the energy, but it isn't always easy.

This is the human side of working poverty, and most of us aren't many steps from it. One medical emergency or job layoff could tank your comfortable middle class existence. There are so many reasons, such as the transition from privately held businesses to the prevalence of investor-driven public companies, the economic crash, outsourcing jobs, and so on.

This is an eye-opener of a book that would be difficult to read if there wasn't a dash of humor thrown in, but still quite serious.

Interesting look at "bootstrap America"

Saw the author on Real Time, thought she was interesting and ordered this book. She made several valid observations that I had not previously considered; cigarettes work as energy boosters, essential in in the fifth hour of ones second job after a 10 hour shift at job one. Homelessness can come PDQ for a variety of reasons having little to do with income or employment. AND you better damn well have a credit card so you can find temporary housing in a motel- no matter how much cash you have on hand. The world is not an easy place for those at or barely above the poverty level. Wow.

Not good at math to begin with? Don't waste your money!

If you need any hand holding with math, forget this book. I can only imagine that the three people who gave it five stars were already good at math and just needed a refresher. I'm terrible but I still feel satisfaction when I can solve a problem. I read recently that doing math is a good way to prevent cognitive decline so I decided to find a math book that would present problems and solutions that I could understand. This book presents the rules and explanations in ABCD format and then gives a few problems with no step-by-step solutions of the actual problems so if you can't solve a problem you have no way of figuring out why. I had to turn to the internet to find out how to do the problems. In fractions my problem was that at first the book dealt with adding two mixed fractions and I could handle that with the explanation given but then there was a problem with three fractions and no explanation was given in layman's terms on how to arrive at the answer. Besides all of the above, the book is very complicated to read.

Best refresher text I've come across

I needed to brush up on long-forgotten math, and so I looked at quite a few math textbooks before making a decision. This one looked like it came closest to meeting my needs, so I ordered it. It actually exceeded my expectations! Not only did it cover material I learned when I was young in a clear and concise manner, it also helped me understand basic concepts that I don't think anyone ever taught me in school. It doesn't condescend or waste time - it truly is written for adults and treats its readers as such. I enjoyed reading it - and I always thought I was not a math person! I plan to get volume 2 next.

Math Overboard fixed it!

I am 72 years old with some kind of strange compulsion to understand why I never understood math.
Now I know! It is about understanding the underlying Concepts of what "math" actually Is....most specifically
basic foundations of numbers...very early on. It is NOT about memorizing...without UNDERSTANDING...they both
go together or it is All lost. There is a significant difference between "passing" a course and being truly educated.

Another great book by Sandra Cisneros!

I highly recommend this book because it is another marvelous work by Sandra Cisneros. Like her other book, The House on Mango Street, it offers sad tales from the hearts of young girls and is an excellent insight on the unique prose style of Cisneros. Besides being enjoyable, the Spanish version may be helpful to those studying Spanish by working on translating, otherwise, this book is still a great classic that any fan of Sandra Cisneros should enjoy!

I love this book. Cisneros writes in such a beautiful and poetic style that I am immediately wherever she takes me. Often when reading this, I had to stop to write down certain lines that appealed to me, such as, "...I believe that love is always eternal. Even if eternity is only five minutes." Wonderful stories.

“This book is written by an experienced exotic animal practitioner and lecturer for a veterinary surgeon in practice who deals with the occasional exotic patient. The main features concentrate on basic information regarding physiology, anatomy, and husbandry. The book contains many excellent and unique colour plates and radiographs for illustration. This will prove invaluable for locating sampling sites and internal and external anatomy for surgery, as well as necropsy. For quick reference the animal classes are divided by colour coded pages. Within each chapter there is information on general and clinical anatomy and physiology of class, followed by more detailed notes on individual species including some guidance on sexing, venepuncture sites and some clinical information. UI deal with many vets who do not treat exotic species on a regular basis and I have recommended this book as a quick reference guide many times. I love this book

The information in this book is somewhat superficial if read by a Diplomate of the ACZM or of the ABVP in any of the exotic fields or if read by a practiced exotic animal veterinarian, but budding exotic animal practitioners and general practitioners who see fewer of these "special species" will find this book highly informative. The delivery is concise and the layout of this text follows the layout of the more advanced exotic animal medical texts - that is to say that it follows the evolution of chordates in an ascending fashion. All-in-all, I love this book, and it has been essential in allowing me to illustrate clearly many concepts when I am speaking with clients and colleagues.

Too poor of informations

As veterinary physiologist i think this book is too poor of informations both on anatomical and physiological aspects of exotic animals biology. I think that a good zoology book could cover this arguments in a better way and for a clinical approach it's better a clinical orienteered book.
