Good coverage but too simple results

Topics are carefully selected. Good coverage of both traditional and cutting-edge new theories and algorithms. Less errors than a normal technique book. Only key derivations are outlined with others just omitted. This makes it easy to follow for an engineer like me but i suppose an academic researcher may dislike it somewhat. Unfortunately, too few results are given for each algorithm. Readers don't know if the algorithms have the potential to meet the various requirements of EC, i.e., residue error, convergence rate, complexity, numerical stability. (By the way, even a simple touch of industry standard of AEC might be helpful for this book) Anyway, for anyone who is interested in either accademic research or implementation of EC, i guess this book gives him/her a solid starting point.

This book really encouraged me and strengthened me in my walk with God. Read it and you will be inspired. I especially loved the way AA Allen revealed his vulnerability and frank admission of his struggle to lay down those things which were hindering the fullness of God in his life. When he finally came thru on the victory side tho, God showed up....big time. Hope for us all in this largely Laodician lukewarm church age!

This book is loaded with nuggets of spiritual gold. It is not laid out as a systematically but as a series of messages, and to those with tender consciences it might seem legalistic. However, I've not read a book quite like it. I've read it more than once.

Invaluable information on branding at all levels

Over the years, I have worked for Fortune 500 companies, small start-ups, mom and pops and my own one-man-show. One essential common ingredient in the success of all of these types of businesses is some form of effective branding strategy. Without this, you are presenting yourself to be just like the next guy and give customers no reason whatsoever to grace your doorstep. Laura Busche does an amazing job with Lean Branding, taking you through the branding process from nuts to bolts. The points that were of most interest and value to me were:

-- Various Brand Strategy Ingredients
-- Branding tactics and real life case studies
-- Branding and visual symbols
-- The included graphics, templates and tutorials
-- The psychology of branding

There is so much here that it is impossible to list it all in one little review. Suffice it to say that if you're interested in branding - and if you are in business and want to be successful, you should be! - then this is a must read.

This should be a $0.99 book.

A few nuggets here, but generally found this to be a superficial overview of branding with a weak attempt to align under the Lean Startup Methodology.

Lots of empty templates that I can fill out myself, which are unreadable on the Kindle and as somebody else said, the screenshots on how to setup a Google Adwords & other accounts is completely superfluous.

There's really not much to be learnt from this book.

Graphic novel = readability & appeal

This book appeared on my desk at the library today; I showed it to a four year old boy who's a big reader this afternoon; he took it from his grandmother and began reading it immediately; they've check it out and taken it home. She had to put a bookmark in it so he would surrender it long enough for the check-out process.

I always found fables as being pretty ho hum as a kid although one must say he has held up pretty well for 2500 year old literature. Bright colors and wildly drawn comics breathe new life and humor into the tales. There are a lot of beautifully illustrated versions of the Fables, but I think this will be the one that gets read.

A fable is a short narrative usually encompassing a moral. After Aesop, they also usually contain anthropomorphized animals. But different cultures have different catalogues of stories such as these passed down from generation to generation, mostly by word of mouth. Just recently, fables have become popular again, and Fable Comics takes full advantage of it. Getting a cross section of some of the best in comic artists, Fable Comics lets the artist go crazy providing there is a moral to the story. This leads to some rather eclectic renditions of these classic narratives.

Letting the artist go free spins a fresh post-modern twist on classic fables and allows them to let their creativity shine through and some rather unique endings. Twist endings were allowed providing a moral had to be told. These range from the classical interpretation of the tale, to “Artists are Stupid, Art is Dead, Everyone’s a Critic” (some of my all-time favorites). Maris Wicks uses her biology background to elucidate and educate on sea mammals. In “The Dolphin, The Whale and the Sprat,” and James Kochalka pulls out all the traditional stops in “The Fox and the Grapes.” These twists almost seemed necessary to propel the graphic novel forward, but with the traditional morals mixed in, it turned out to be a refreshing mix (although I would have changed a bit of the ordering of the fables).

I have to admit, from personal experience, that letting the artist go wild is not necessarily a good thing. Some of the Fables were cute, but contrived; others left you yawning in boredom, wanting to skip ahead to the next one. It’s a good thing fables are generally short. The roster of artists is also in a distinctly American style, cartoonish with few exceptions. This is not a bad thing, however, I would have preferred a more culturally diverse drawing style, but for what the book was trying to convey, it suited me fine.

There are a few gems in the lot. Jaime Hernandez does a spectacular job with “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” Roger Langridge handles “”Democles and His Fable” with grace and flair, Shelli Pardline gracefully pens “The Thief and the Watchdog,” and George O’Conner renders in a prince Valiant type manner, the various “Hermes” tales. My personal favorite was R. Sikoryak’s Krazy Kat rendition of “The Lion and the Mouse.” It really spoke in the words and depictions of the famous George Harriman cartoon strip. Skillfully rendered in Harriman’s style, the moral at the end left me giggling inanely for minutes, at passing gags, and the stereotypical morphing backgrounds that Krazy Kat was noted for.

If you are a fan of Aesop you will not want to miss this collection. Fable Comics has something for everyone, and the diverse art will defiantly have you lustering after any new artists you come across (or already know, there are a few New York Times artists here). With it’s easy to read format, hopefully you will learn yourself a moral or two.

Fables are an age-old way to get a moral across through telling a story. We all know about how the lazy hare tanks in a “can’t-lose race” with a tortoise by being overconfident and neglecting to do the work to win. We may also have learned the lesson about not “crying wolf,” or telling a lie to get attention because people may not believe us when we tell the truth. Prominent graphic artists bring these tales and others to life in Fable Comics, a collection edited by Chris Duffy.
Most, though not all, of the stories are based on fables from Aesop. A note in the back of the book defines a fable as “a story with a lesson, usually—not always—starring animals.” The oldest fables may come from many authors and many sources, but some of the more modern ones come from people who are well known, like the Russian satirist Ivan Krilof or the American author Ambrose Bierce.
This collection is accessible for kids as young as six, and should be fun for the whole family. Each tale is reimagined by the artists with both words and graphics, and the origin of the fable is labeled. Because different artists illustrate each fable, many styles and color schemes appear in the book. It could be fun to compare them, and to look for other titles by the artists. It could also be interesting for family members to talk about which styles they like best and why.

If you've always wanted to learn DOS....

The book is easy to follow and the hands-on exercies really help solidify the concepts in your head. HUGE book - how many pounds does this thing weigh? A must-read for those who've never used DOS but want to learn.

Not for Administrators in a Corporate environment

If your need is a "classroom in a book" on basic command line operation - then this book may be for you as it is filled with examples and labs (although $... is a bit steep for the privilege). However, administrators in corporate environments will find the book too simplistic for their needs.

Small things in big packages.

This book is easy to follow. It will help you get a feel for MS DOS, it is for the true beginner of DOS. It is not for the seasoned DOS expert, cause it is too simple. I was a true beginner at DOS, used this book for an independent "command line" class at college. Do not let the colorless text fool you.

While not "pretty" like other books, it has some good knowledge to be had. I had much success with it.

This book has one huge drawback - As you go thru the exercises, altering files, moving files to other directories, and so forth, each chapter depends on what you did in the previous one. If you mess up bad enough and do not have a backup of your work, you will get into a mess. You HAVE to go thru this book in sequence for things to work right. Take all instructions and warnings serious.

Be careful with what you learn tho, and heed the authors warnings, cause thru DOS, it is easy to wipe out tons of files on any drive with a few simple keystrokes. You will "know enough to get into trouble" with certain things.

NEVER experiment with DELETE commands (DEL) while on your hard drive if you are not sure what you are doing.
