What an excellent read. True, fascinating and colorfully written. This will give the reader a glimpse into the bush war of Souther Africa, with specific emphasis on the reconnaissance soldier's life. I don't know if this is available in english, if so, a must read for everyone.

As The Surrounded opens, Archilde Le�n has just returned from the big city to his father's ranch on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana. The story that unfolds captures the intense and varied conflict that already characterized reservation life in 1936, when this remarkable novel was first published.

Educated at a federal Indian boarding school, Archilde is torn not only between white and Indian cultures but also between love for his Spanish father and his Indian mother, who in her old age is rejecting white culture and religion to return to the ways of her people. Archilde's young contemporaries, meanwhile, are succumbing to the destructive influence of reservation life, growing increasingly uprooted, dissolute, and hopeless. Although Archilde plans to leave the reservation after a brief visit, his entanglements delay his departure until he faces destruction by the white man's law.

In an early review of The Surrounded, Oliver La Farge praised it as "simple, clear, direct, devoid of affectations, and fast-moving." He included it in his "small list of creditable modern novels using the first Americans as theme." Several decades later, long out of print but not forgotten, The Surrounded is still considered one of the best works of fiction by or about Native Americans.

The Surrounded: A Book for our Times

Some of the best books are those that have been retrieved from the shelf and dusted off. Such is the case with The Surrounded, first published in 1936 by the late Native American anthropologist, D'Arcy McNickle. Through this singular work of fiction McNickle attempted to generate understanding about the realities of a people and a culture disrupted and all but destroyed by assimilation into white society. The Surrounded is a measuring stick by which we can read the failures and progress of first Americans and America itself.

The Surrounded is replete with oral origin stories and native traditions juxtaposed with the poignant stories of characters representative of a culture divided and camped on the edge of extinction. Set on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana, McNickle's story revolves around Archilde Leon, a young Native American educated in white ways who struggles with feelings of alienation when he encounters the unchanged dysfunction of his own family and the longing of his tribe for the old ways:

. . . it was funny to come home and sit at his mother's feast. His eyes saw the old faces, faces he had forgotten about, never thought to see again; and now to be sitting in the circle of firelight and looking at them-but it wasn't really funny, not deeply funny. The deeper feeling was the impatience, irritation, an uneasy feeling in the stomach. Why could he not

endure them for just these few hours? Why did they make him sick? (62)

Even as he eventually softens toward his own culture, Archilde is caught up and ultimately destroyed by the influences of the reservation. Archilde's story could be that of any reservation Native today.

The Surrounded portrays a Native culture encompassed and diminished by white neighbors, white law, and a white social system. Rather than blending or accepting help, however, the people cling tenaciously to tribal loyalties, even when it means their destruction. Symbolically, Archilde attempts to rescue an emaciated mare and her foal existing in a grueling land. Despite her extreme condition, the frustrated Archilde cannot reach her-she is simply too wild to understand that he is trying to help. In a desperate attempt to save the creature, he ends up driving her to her death: "The sun had set and in the evening light a rider on a strong white horse led an unprotesting skeleton on a rope. It was grotesque" (241). Prophetically, the scene depicts his own fall, and reflects the fine line that modern first Americans walk.

McNickle's writing captured the Native American heart, at once spirited and broken, and projected it down through the years to the present. As literature that imparts empathy for the dilemma of first Americans, The Surrounded is a book for our times.

Thoughts on McNickle's The Surrounded

D'Arcy McNickle's The Surrounded, is an excellent fictional text. Written around the time that can be referredto as "forced assimilation", "The Surrounded" deals with identity conflicts affecting Native youth. Native kids are being forced to attend boarding schools in order to assimilate to white culture. The protagonist, Archilde, is torn between pursuing life within the context of white or Native tradition. His mother is Salish and his father is an immigrant farmer from Spain. This further complicates his search for identity, because, while his mother is Salish, and does not want to assimilate, his father is Spanish, and is already an example of an assimilated minority.

The text does an excellent job of incorporating the thoughts of all the characters, and it is interesting to consider what is and is not "lost in translation" between the characters. I am not speaking merely about the translation of languages, but of the ways in which the characters perceive one another, how correct these perceptions are, and to what degree these perceptions affect their actions in the novel. Native and white cultures want Archilde to assimilate in their interest. The dialogue between language and cultures is fascinating. In the beginning, Archilde seems to be very interested in white culture, but as time rolls along, and he explores the effects of assimilation on the reservation, his viewpoint begins to shift.

Archilde's progression throughout the novel and the ways in which he learns and begins to understand those around him, is written in a poignant and emotional way that does not beg sympathy. Instead, the writing asks for understanding. The reader is asked to consider the perspective of U.S. history from the other side in a way that he/she can relate to through character usage. In this way, McNickle's work is an essential read for anyone who wishes to understand a little bit better, one small piece of the complex history between colonists and Indians, as told by one who experienced it.

The Surrounded by D'Arcy McNickle is a heartaching story of the Salish Indians who were forced into a place of "in-between" through the conversion of the tribe to the Catholic faith and the loss of their reservation land, through sale, to the white man.

The narrative follows Archilde, the second to youngest son of Max Leon, a Spaniard, and Catharine, a Salish woman. Archilde is one of seven sons - each of whom has chosen to live in a sort of disregard for the traditions and desires of Max.

Every character in this book has layers of layers of complexity. Archilde is viewed by his mother as one person, his father another, and the people surrounding him as yet another. Max Leon surprises again and again with his choices, Catharine's character is a beautiful portrayal in the heartbreak that can occur when tradition is squashed beneath the ideas of "civilization," and the supporting cast provide the necessary surroundings for the story to evolve in a way that was representative of the time and history of the Salish people in Montana.

I loved this book for it's honest, relevant message. It was written in the 1930s, but continues to be a treasure of a book. The Salish live in these pages - not in their original lifestyle, but rather a as a reminder of what happens when one culture pressures another into a life and set of beliefs which are not their own.

As one of the authors, I am obviously biased. However objectively reading the entire book I am very much impressed with the scope and quality of the contributions. Many of the authors have written books on their chosen subjects, but distill them here with grace and thoroughness. There are many sub-genres contributing to the power and beauty of Asian theatre normally glossed over in especially Western-trained academics' accounts that are here given full articles and chapters: music, masks, dance, architecture. Gender in traditional and modern theatre, and the rise of spoken-word drama are given full chapters. It reveals the methodology of the so called International community to serve the interests of the big money and submitting to the will of the US. This autopsy gives clues also to the process in Ukraine and elsewhere, where the interests of the US and Germany come together. This book also shows the meager meaning of democracy when it does not serve the power. It also shows how human suffering does not count. This book gives the reader a full understanding of the state of affairs in the world. This is one of the most important books ever.

This is a very useful book, with extensive pictures of Indian camps of the northern US and Canada, favoring Algonkian indians. Anishinabe is the original word for Algonkian, Ojibwa, Chippewa, and other such words. The Tribe of Foxes: The True Inside Story About the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, and the museum book put out by the Mashantucket Pequot museum, which I can't seem to find on Amazon, are also very useful in this regard. By way, wigwams circulate heat far more effectively than square houses. If you compare the pilgrim houses, in that Massachusetts museum at Plymouth, with the wigwams, the pilgrim houses were at most 10 degrees warmer, F., than outer temperature, in the winter, while Wigwams were a good 30-40 degrees warmer, F., in winter. The Iroquois longhouse became the Quonset Hut, of WW II fame, which is an Iroquois longhouse built of metal, sometimes on a concrete foundation.

We used this book in the classroom to teach background knowledge of the Ojibwe culture in preparation for reading The Birchbark House. Even though it's below grade level as a book to be read through, it's a great tool to use in sections or pieces because it's engaging and visual.

A lot more than you might have bargained for.

First the good. This is without doubt the largest and most photo comprehensive Pit Bull book I have ever laid eyes on. Definitely not your standard 3/4 inch thick series guide book churned out by some publishing company that only seems to include one or two chapters specific to your dog. No no no. This book is written by someone seemingly intensely knowledgable about this particular type of dog, it's history, it's uses, and it's pedigree. Wow. And sooooo many photos.

Now the bad. I agree very much with other reviewers who state that this man seems to have no particular love for this kind of dog in terms of including it as part of a family. He approaches the subject from a "dogs are property and have uses, and if they aren't useful they shouldn't exist" perspective. He reminds me very much of my grandpa, who learned growing up to appreciate dogs, to use them, to repect them for what they could do, but never loved them. His dogs were always outside, he only talked about what they were good for never about his particular feelings for a particular dog. Stratton reminds me sooo much of that way of thinking. He does seem to look at dogs with the same appreciation of nice pick-up or some other piece of property. Stratton attempts to debunk any arguement against dogfighting. It seems obvious from the beginning of his description of the subject that he does or has participated in it in the past. He won't even call it dogfighting as he describes it. I'm well aware that many descriptions of dogfighting are grossly uninformed and sensationalistic, but he spends the chapter justifying it and defending it as a worthwhile activity. He reminds me of people trying to justify hunting with assault rifles. Pretentious. I am a gun owner and a pit bull owner and I don't appreciate people trying to make completely non-rational justifications just so they can keep doing what they want to do. Dogfighting is not a bloodless contest of strength and prowess, Stratton approaches it like most people would approach a track meet or a football game. And seems to incinuate that anyone who might not like dogfighting must automatically be some ultra-liberal hippie from San Francisco. Stratton is full of it.

Overall, if you're a pit bull owner, I would say this is some important material for you to be aware of. Because this is part of the world that shapes the perception of your dog. I would have easily given this book a much higher rating, as it is one of the most comprehensive breed books I've ever seen, but his attitude and seemingly basic lack of empathy for a dog and it's welfare and happy existance disgusts me. He acts as if every pit bull of value automatically wants to crawl into a ring and slug it out. That it's natural. If you've ever owned or known a pit bull, the truer statement is that most pit bulls want to do anything you want them to do. Because they want to be with you and be praised and loved by you. Too bad this man doesn't seem to understand that.

tells it like it is

I have been interested in and read about the american pit bull terrier for the last ten years. During this time period I have read literature spanning from Semencic to Jessup and I have not found an author more informative or as knowledgable as Stratton. This is, perhaps, his best work. While authors like Jessup and Semencic provide a good coverage on the APBT, you will only find its spirit within Stratton's work. To put it short, Stratton tells it like it is and thats what the breed needs to understand it. Contrary to what ill informed opinions from Norway might say, the pit bull is still the preeminent fighting dog and causing breeds to go extinct from Japan (Tosas) to Spain (Canary dogs). This ability is what is abused and is misconcieved by the general public and it takes an author like Stratton to clear the air and explain why a proverbial fighting machine is actually a loving clown with a temperment that is so stable and human friendly most kennels employ dobermans and other guardogs to protect them from being stolen by strangers! If you buy one book, buy this one!

The truth and nothing but the truth.....

Well...This is the book every journalist should read before he opens his mouth. This is, lets say, a fair book. RFS doesn't say that the PB is the most friendliest breed on earth because som attacks that have happened a typical for the breed. He aswell tells the truth that a PB that is well breed and socialized have a much longer tolerance than any other breed existing today. I found this book very funny and very interesting as I have read almost all books on the subject. This is the best book with nice pictures of some of the best. He points out that owners of PB should be the ones that is open for discussion and the ones with the little extra care for the dogs. To waste a PB by treating it bad its the same thing as destroying the source of courage, loyalty and spirit. I am afraid to say that this breed is more than a dog, it somehow feels like if it is a bit closer to us than we think it is.

Good story, a little short for me

I like all the Masters & Mercenaries books and I enjoyed this story. Macon & Allyson were great characters. Macon is, Adam's brother & a wounded vet who can't bring himself to talk to his fallen buddy's family. Unbeknownst to him the new waitress at the restaurant where he works is the buddy's sister who came there looking for him to get answers about her brother's death. But she doesn't know how to approach him and when she is offered a job she takes & thinks to get to know him & then ask. But events overtake them & they become attached to one another. Allyson dithers about admitting who she is, getting in deeper & deeper with Macon & the group. Then things go the way these things go.
Overall I liked the story except for one thing & it's the one thing that irritates me about the whole series. They bring a vanilla woman to a BDSM party/club & of course she is a bit 'thrown' as it were, by what all she is seeing & she says something like "I'm not sure what to think about that" at some scene or other & is immediately shot down. "Why do you need to think anything about it? It's nothing to do with you." Which would make me turn around and leave right there. So automatic unthinking acceptance is expected and nothing else is acceptable? She's not allowed to take a few moments and decide whether she finds it appealing/unappealing to watch, how it might feel to participate, whether she's turned on by it, etc. Just "no, no thinking allowed. This is how it is period." Seems sort of cultish to me. And is a massive turn off. I always have to put the books down at that part because I'm too busy thinking what huge a$$holes the doms & subs are right then to keep reading.
But I get over it and enjoy the rest of the story.

Another winner! This was awesome!

Yowza! I love the Masters & Mercenaries series. When I saw that this book dealt with Adam's brother I snatched it up and inhaled it. This is a great story - really good, nicely paced plot. The main characters, Macon and Ally are warm, engaging and well rounded and easy to relate to and to love. Throw in some comedy courtesy of Ian and Sean Taggert, hot sex and BDSM and, Houston, we have a winner!.

I so hope there will be more books dealing with the Top guys.

Loved it. Read it.

I love everything Lexi Blake writes. Another awesome book! I love that she doesn't write the typical romance novel book where the guy has a perfect body. Society seems to think that if you are scared or lost a limb then you lose your sexuality. Bravo Lexi! Macon and Allyson are beautiful people. Appearances by Ian, Sean, Jake and Adam were a blast. Love this book!
