This guide is great! It gives you great tips on defeating each duelist, how to unlock each 'level', how to build your own deck, as well as all of the codes for each card in the game (excluding the Egyptian God Cards, of course!). I won this guide in a contest, and so just reading it made me want to buy it! I recomend this book to anyone who is stuck in the game or would like a hand getting through Kaiba's tournument.

Valuable Insights into the Mystery of Happiness

Flow are those inexplicable moments of indescribable happiness that we experience at rare intervals, when we are "surprised by joy." These precious moments seem to be gifts, almost accidental peak experiences in which life seems rich with meaning, joy and wonder. When and why do these magic episodes intrude upon our humdrum existences? Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's answer may surprise you: "Contrary to what we usually believe, moments like these, the best moments of our lives, are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times ... The best moments of our lives usually occur when a person's body or mind is stretched to the limits in a voluntary moment to achieve something difficult and worthwhile. Optimal experience is thus something we make happen ... For each person there are thousands of opportunities, challenges to expand ourselves."

Csikszentmihalyi's theme is happiness. This philosopher-psychologist points out the Aristotelian concept that all other things we seek, riches, fame, power, etc. are valued only because we believe they will make us happy. Based upon decades of research on the mystery of happiness, Csikszentmihalyi defines it as moments of self-forgetfulness when we are totally absorbed in the process of life ... intervals of peak creativity and self-expression. He expands upon the research of Abraham Maslow and agrees that peak experiences are within the reach of us all. Amazon already did a good job summarizing Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Flow, so I will instead focus on evaluating its content.

The book is set up in a way where the first few chapters concentrate on defining and analyzing the intricate relationship between human consciousness and happiness. Once this is firmly established, Csikszentmihalyi goes on to introduce the concept of flow, its physiology and its conditions. All subsequent chapters then examine flow in various aspects of our lives and the last chapter focuses on the philosophical implications of the concept and whether it relates to finding "meaning in life".

It has been said in science that any researcher should have the ability to explain their theory clearly and concisely to a layman. I felt that Csikszentmihalyi's style of writing is very true to this statement, as he puts in a particular effort to make his book accessible and very easy to read for just about anyone. I would even say that he is overly simple to a fault - using a philosophically-conversational tone at the expense of a slightly more rigid "literature review" style that predominates more modern pop sci books. Despite this, the author is still capable of conveying a decent amount of science and methodology behind his discovery and analysis of the optimal experience model.

To me, the most powerful chapters were really the first five where, as I discussed earlier, Csikszentmihalyi really puts the meat on the bones of his theory of flow and masterfully connects everything together. Some passages just made so much sense that I had to put the book down and seriously contemplate about what is being said and how it relates to my entire understanding of life. To use the author's own language it put me in a very deep and enjoyable "flow of thought".

The book does have a small blemish in the fact that it gets a bit repetitive when it goes into listing the occurrence of flow in everyday settings. I don't have anything against the discussion of applicability of the theory, it just seems that sections containing very similar messages could have been condensed. Perhaps 240 pages (not including notes and references) is a bit much for this type of format and ideally it should have been closer to 200 pages. However, I want to emphasize that this small fault does not in any way make the book a "drag" and some people may find this "extra" information rather useful.

To conclude, I found Csikszentmihalyi's lifelong research, his findings and the overall message of his work extremely compelling and powerful. The theory of flow does an excellent job describing many aspects of our lives and most importantly sheds light on the conditions of happy and meaningful existence. I would honestly recommend this book to anyone. It is rather short and very readable and guaranteed to make you analyze your life and the life of your friends and family through the lens of the theory of flow.

How far can autotelicity lead us?

The theme of this book argue that we can be fully autotelic to find a satisfaction which will lift us above the sea of random events we cannot control. We are social animals, after all. I would doubt if we can really live against the expectation of social values or poverty to follow the inner call on its own terms. This is an ambitious thesis that the book author cannot finish proving. But I appreciate the beauty of the thesis and the piecemeal anecdotes all over the book.

Some good, Some just OK

The book comes with stories form the following comics:
Detective 347: A story that is a cross between real and imaginary (you have to read the story to understand). It's your basic 1960s Batman story and is just OK.

World's Finest 184: An imaginary tale. Similar to the first story, basic 1960s and is OK.

Brave and the Bold 115: A story with a teamup with the Atom. The basic storyline is definitely a stretch. I like Jim Aparo's art, but not much else.

Batman 291 -294 - the main reason I bought this TPB. I've always liked this story about how different criminals claim to have killed Batman and go on trial with Two-Face as DA. Enjoyable.

World's Finest 269: The other reason I bought this book. Back when World's Finest contained about 5 stories (so this is a short story). Batman is buried alive and Superman and Robin look for him. A good story.

Batman Chronicles 8: I'd never seen this story and found it good.

Nightwing 52: I'm not sure why this was included. It is not the full story from that comic (the full story appears in Nightwing: On Razors Edge). The art is good, but really a waste of a few pages.

Overall the quality of the book is good. The paper is better than most of the original comics and the coloring looks good as well.

For the stories I liked, I gave it a 4 and ignored the stories that were just OK.

trial of the century!

Although there are several theme-related stories here, the reason for getting this volume is for the story on the cover. It's a cool premise: It's 1978, and Batman has been killed under mysterious circumstances. Naturally practically everyone wants to take credit for killing him -- the phrase wasn't in existence at the time, but it would be "instant street cred"!

So the biggest underworld figures in Gotham City gather in a secluded country estate and hold ... a trial. Yes, in a comic perversion of the legal system they so despise, those who claim to have killed Batman will tell their story to a criminal courtroom, packed with costumed criminals, with a jury of them as well. It's presided over by that master of legal intricacies, Ra's a Ghul. Murmurs of approval ripple through the courtroom as the prosecutor steps forward -- Two-Face, former district attorney!

First Catwoman testifies -- everyone knows that she doesn't kill, which has kept her from becoming a major player. If she could take credit for this, she could recruit some of the finest talent around. Ah, but it's not meant to be. We also work our way through the testimonies of the Riddler, and a bit surprisingly, Lex Luthor -- and of course the Joker, with whom the story concludes.

Unfortunately, the actual execution of the story, so to speak ... isn't so great. It worked better in 1978, with a less demanding audience. Still, I certainly think it's an interesting concept, and it was one of the few batman stories in that era that spanned four consecutive issues. Why it's so obscure now, I don't know -- it was one of the biggest batman stories of the 70s!

How about having a 21st century version of the same story?! The same premise with contemporary art and storytelling would be epic. Anyone? Anyone??

A Batman Retread

This volume of Batman reprints have stories regarding to Batman's death. Similar to Batman RIP.

The biggest problem I have in this collection is there are also two stories in this collection that are abridged from the original comic text. If I want an abridgement of the comic story, i can rip up a comic from my collectionm with a razor blade myself.

I usually buy a reprint collection to enjoy a grouping of comics in a similar theme (JLA Membership, Green Arrow/Black Canary wedding album, Bat Lash reprints, Superman and Flash racing stories, or a story arc of a book). To this end, it is what I requested when I buy reprints. However if the new trend is cut a story of two to fit it into a page count of a book...Please just do not put the story in is my suggestion.

The stock of the page is more newsprintee than a good stock, but the transfer and coloring is first rate. So this collection is a great keeper in any collection with minor imperfections

Gotta love Miles

I hate to say this, but the movie was better. Paul Giamatti makes Miles a much more sympathetic character and you really feel that he is a good guy underneath his flaws. In the book Miles comes across as a narcissist who likes to intimidate friends with his vocabulary and pretensions. We already knew how he ripped off his mom and lied about other things, but at least the film version has you rooting for him because he is adorably down on his luck. Jack however, Jack is just the same. It is hard not to laugh at his antics and his down to earth base motives. Also the book has a "boar hunt" that did not need to be there, except to show the locals as gun-toting rednecks. Some of the names were changed in the film, and Jack's girlfriend does not have a daughter in the book. I also wanted to meet his annoying in-laws but they are only in the film version. Overall a good read but not one to make you love Miles.

The Book vs. The Movie

Traditionally, a book is better than the movie version -- notable exceptions include "Field of Dreams," "Ordinary People," and "The Horse Whisperer." But now, finally having read this book and seen the movie multiple times, I vote for the movie, while giving enormous credit to Rex Pickett.

Having read the book, one must wonder about some of the choices made in the movie -- why, for example was Miles moved to San Diego for home base and why does Maya vanish for more than the last half hour of the movie? We all know the most famous line from the movie about f***king Merlot, but in the movie, the line just seems to drop out of nowhere. As Pickett writes throughout the book, Miles is so anti-Merlot and it's explained why -- we're not surprised when he gives the line in the book. I also like the fact that the novel gives context to the term "Sideways" and has Miles saying goodbye to Jack in Paso Robles, a moment lost in the movie.

As I said, give Pickett credit because the major plot points in the movie are mostly originally established in the novel. But the idea that Jack would have to pay Maya to have sex with Miles seemed silly and the whole subplot with Brad and wild boar hunting seemed irrelevant. A good book editor would have slashed this novel by at least 50 to 75 pages and made it tighter. Way too long.

I give Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor enormous credit for taking the great parts of this story and making them ring true emotionally. They truly deserved the Oscar for Best Screenplay. Replacing "Terra" with "Stephanie," replacing her shotgun with a motorcycle helmet, making Maya into a more complete person, including that lovely monologue about wine. They also put things in the proper sequence.

So the novel is more a curiosity piece to me and I suggest any aspiring screenwriter buy the book and see the movie. I would have loved to been the fly on the wall and seen/heard Rex Pickett's reaction the first time he either read the script or saw a preview. Different worlds.

Fun for wine lovers

For anyone who enjoyed the movie, this is a must read. The book begins with a hysterical wine tasting that should have made it to the movie, but didn't, and the ending was far more satisfying than the one in the book. Pour yourself a glass of wine--preferably not merlot--and enjoy!

About the Author
Randy Stoecker is a Professor of Community and Environmental Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, with a joint appointment at the University of Wisconsin Extension Center for Community and Economic Development. He is the moderator/editor of COMM-ORG: The On-Line Conference on Community Organizing and Development (http://comm-org.wisc.edu). His areas of expertise include community organizing and development, participatory action research/evaluation, and community information technology. He has been involved in a wide variety of community-based participatory research projects and participatory evaluations with community development corporations, community organizing groups, and community information technology programs across North America and Australia. He also helped build and evaluate university-community collaborations through the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation’s Learn and Serve America Community Research Project. Randy trains, speaks and writes extensively on community organizing and development, community-based participatory research, service learning, and community information technology. He is author of Defending Community (1994) co-author of Community-Based Research and Higher Education (2003), and co-editor of The Unheard Voices: Community Organizations and Service Learning (2009). I look forward to using this textbook

I have taught invertebrate zoology for over 20 years (so far). During that time I used textbooks by Kozloff, Moore, Brusca and Brusca, and Ruppert, Fox and Barnes. I cut my teeth on Barnes, and used for the most part subsequent editions of that book. Over the past few decades, however, invertebrate zoology has become an increasingly dynamic field of study in terms of phylogenetic analysis. Many textbooks have tried to include some of these changes, but at the same time many of the former stalwart textbooks have fallen out of print or fallen behind in keeping up with these changes.

The most recent edition of Ruppert, Fox and Barnes came out in 2004...a decade ago. During that time I have had to look increasingly to outside sources to update taxonomic changes that happened in the meantime. I'm currently using Ruppert, Fox, and Barnes 7e for my invertebrate zoology course. There are not, as far as I know, any plans for an 8th edition of that book. Since this is the case it's time for a change.

A couple of days ago a review copy of Pechenik 7e appeared in my mailbox, and I eagerly flipped though it. My first stop was to see how Pechenik covered the annelids and it's related groups. Bam! He nailed it! There were the Sipunculids, Echiurans, and Pogonophorans with its new clade name (Siboglinidae) right where they belonged, embedded in the annelid tree. Other groups also received appropriate upgrades in the treatment of their taxonomies. Pechenik is on the ball.

I have decided that starting next year I'll be using Pechenik's Invertebrate Zoology 7e for my class.

This book includes a useful but not overbearing treatment of protists, good coverage of all major and minor clades of invertebrates, much needed updates to invertebrate taxonomy, nice line drawings, b/w photographs, references for further investigation in each chapter, a taxonomic nomenclature I can make sense of, and clear scientific writing.

I plan to apply Pechenik's taxonomic nomenclature to my invertebrate zoology lab manual when I work up its second edition.

It's a great book to use

It's a great book to use, well organized, and I particularly like the updated phylogenetic information. However, it does need another round of proofreading. There are typos and a few seemingly mislabelled headings, etc., which make it a bit confusing in places.

I have used this book since 2009 as an instructor for Invertebrate Zoology and it is the best out there! It does not have any color pictures, but there are plenty of other invertebrate zoology textbooks that you can supplement with, if that is what you are looking for.

About the Author
Keenu Hale was born on March 19, 1992 at Blanchfield Hospital, Fort Campbell, KY. His birth was complicated with near death moments and his life was at jeopardy as he had Seizure Disorders (Grand Mal Seizure), which was undetected until he was 6 months of age. This damaged the left side of his brain. Within his first 5 years of life he was brushed with four life threatening situations. God has preserved his life for a reason as he has been given a special gift. Winning his first art contest at the age of 18 months, he always had a pen in his hand drawing on everything. Keenu is a Prodigy. At present, Keenu Hale is a Student at School of Visual Arts in New York City, New York. He has dreams of becoming an Animator. Creating various genres of cartoon styles, he currently has over 1,000 of his own characters as he hopes to give his characters purpose through his storybooks. His first book, Timmy and the Stitch Crows in Life in the Suburbs, gives readers a glimpse of his diverse talent in a very unique setting that readers can relate to.
